A legal team mandated "loaded chamber" indicator? Cheap cylinder lock? :-) A "demil"? sort of like a deCiv?
It looks like a lot of gasses will come out of there. Maybe it was a plug to keep the cylinder from rotating?
It's an odd one for sure.

Hmmm, I just pulled out my new production 4" 610 and there is no such hole there. Maybe a design change?

Think I'll post the picture on the S&W forum...

Forgot to add... Love that DX front sight. Ease of changing to match the shooting conditions matters to us old guys with old eyes.

Consensus seems to be that it is for a ball detent. Wonder why it is the only one that has it.

The link posted a couple posts up on the S&W Forum showed what it is supposed to be. Borrowed the picture and posted below. The detent ball and spring are not there. This gun is NIB. Barrel shroud looks cut for the detent ball. May need to go home to S&W for the extra parts.... Or a different barrel and crane

This placement for a ball detent was on early Model 69 44 Mags. My later model 69 has a different ball detent placement inside the crane instead of outside like on the one pictured. Apparently it was a design S&W abandoned pretty quickly.

I would sure like to see S&W bring out a Mountain Gun in 10mm.
