In the 80's or thereabouts I had a bulldog in .44 special and the unbreakable beryllium copper firing pin CA claimed to have in it broke. It took over a year badgering CA for a replacement, when I got it I traded it on a 629.

Man, that is bizarre. I've never once heard of them taking that long to respond to a request. I've called for small parts before (just recently too) and they replied "I'll send them right out," and then wouldn't even let me pay for them.
Wonder if you caught them after the bankruptcy and you got the second owner. Those were not good times for Charter Arms and is probably the biggest detriment to their reputation.

Their "excuse" was their parts were all dedicated to the assembly line, talk about a slap in the face! Anyway, I finally got someone who claimed to go to the assembly line and an not-yet-plated one and he sent it to me... no charge :-)
