This gentleman makes a very nice hat. I got a pure beaver Gus from him this fall. Not cheap but it's a good one. baldwinhats.com/Another fine hatter from Oregon.

Is that the guy that took over Art’s shop? BTW….I may be the only one here that knows the Black Sheep Hats thang…. No, that's David Gibson and he's very good, too. I have seen his work in person and it is top-notch. Black Sheep Hat Works stopped taking orders sometime back. Not sure if that has changed. I was quoted 12 months for my hat and it took around 23 months. Dustin Linebaugh of hats…. One of the best out there but long waits…

Mine is not as nice as those… mine is a Scala Classico, New Yorker… just says 100% wool… doesn’t say what kind of wool on the tags… I like the idea of saving this lining, and replacing it with something cooler, but not necessarily venting through the hat???
I’ll post some pics tomorrow

Just checked, the lining is not removable… Mrs had to order it from a high end men’s store 6-8 years ago… I found a tag underneath the sweatband that says made in china… a bit disappointing

The clear vinyl is a grease guard as Doug said. I have some of both but you rarely see them in modern hats. The Rocky Mountain Hatters pictured below is the only new hat I've had made that came with the grease shield. My other one is 40 years old, an old Texas Hatters pure beaver from back when they were in Austin. I don't find them much hotter to wear. I don't have any linerless felt hats.

I have found, at least for me, when in really hot weather, especially in direct sunlight, that the only real relief I notice is the ventilated straw hats with open weave all over the crown of the hat. Small breezes are directed through those holes and feel like a fan, or even A/C, on your head.
Tilting your hat back on your head can help regulate your temperature, too.

mine has a full ( larger "grease cap" ) if this one is not specifying the wool composition... assuming it's likely rabbit???

Wool is wool, comes from sheep.
Unspecified felt is often hare but yours is specified as wool.

Even with -40's wind chill the other night, my ears were freezing, walking the 2 blocks from the Surf Ballroom, But the top of my head was still soaked like a sauna under the hat... since I saw the made in china tag under the sweat band, I assume this is nothing special, & maybe I can add some vents in the crown, & a cooler liner???
I don't want to offend any of the Hat guys, by sending a custom hat maker, a "Walmart" hat, & asking them to do the work... do you think this one would be OK to send to any of the recommendations you guys made???

might sound dumb, but I looked at the Scala's on the www, & they are about $60.00 I would be willing to spend that, or a little more to make it not so hot to wear... MRS bought it for me, & I have more spendable cash than she, so it has sentimental value, so if I could make it more a hat I'd love, I'd be willing to do that, even if it included venting the crown... at minimum, I never grease my hair, so a lighter liner would be better than the sauna on my head now...

Wool is wool, comes from sheep. Unspecified felt is often hare but yours is specified as wool. Unless I’m mistaken bison is also referred to as wool, whether correctly or not. Not saying his hat is bison just saying there is no absolute on being from sheep. Trapr

MWM, I’d say modify away, I’m sure the wife would appreciate seeing you wear the hat more without knowing the steps taken to get there. Whatever it takes to get use or wear out of the hat she would probably just appreciate seeing you get use from her gift.
