My first bow killed deer was stolen just like BigBore5. Punched a big broadhead thru lungs of buck with it's head down in the creek drinking. It turned to look at where the arrow had crunched into the far bank. Walked away losing blood from both sides. Was two ridges from camp so just headed back for help. We trailed to a gut pile, then Jeep tracks.

I hit a nice buck bowhunting and waited about an hour before I got down. Followed a long, sparce blood trail and found a gut pile at the end of the trail. Couldn't believe someone trespassed on our private lease and stole my buck. Two days later I called a guy who shared the lease and told him about losing the buck. He said he found my buck and thought it was one he had just hit. He had lost his blood trail and stumbled across my deer. That meant his buck was still out there somewhere. We went back to look and sure enough, we found his buck deep in a swamp. His was a good bit bigger than mine.

OP, please tell us more about the thermal scanner. Sounds like a great tool It's a Burris BTH 35 "cheap" entry level stuff. (not at all cheap, but not multi thousand dollar stuff like most thermal gear) I think it works well enough for my needs. I WAS hoping I'd be able to blood track with it, but they're not really made for that close up, though it would probably work someone what. Hunting, I was able to spot a bedded deer in a field one morning before sunrise that I likely never would have seen.

I lost a doe a couple years back. I hit her with a 50 caliber round ball at about 60 yards. It was pretty thick in that spot with cedars and briars and buck brush. She went behind a cedar tree and I didn’t see her again but I heard her moving right. I looked a while and couldn’t see anything so I called a buddy and he and I looked a couple hours. Only a couple of drops of blood where she had been and nothing else. I looked the next day a good while too.
I found the carcass the next spring about 75 yards to the left of where I’d shot her. I can only surmise that the when she disappeared, she went left, and another doe got spooked and headed right, which I mistakenly thought was mine.
