I AM ON A 6,000 ACRE, HIGH FENCED, HUNTING LEASE (LA CHATA) 50 MINUTES FROM MY FRONT DOOR. THE PLACE IS FULL OF WHITETAIL AND NILGAI ANTELOPE, AND IS ALSO HOME TO OSTRICH, ADDAX, WATERBUCK, WILDEBEESTE, ZEBRA, HOGS, JAVELINA AND TURKEY. UNFORTUNEATELY FOR ME, NO HANDGUN HUNTING ALLOWED.
I AM NOT TOO ENTHUSED ABOUT THE HUNTING BECAUSE OF THE RIFLE ONLY REQUIREMENT BUT DID GET A LITTLE EXCITED A COUPLE OF WEEKS BACK WHEN I SHOT A NICE 8 POINT WITH A WINCHESTER MODEL 94 SRC TRAPPER IN 45 COLT USING A 275gr SWC HP BULLET FROM SIXSHOT. THIS WAS MY FIRST DEER WITH A RIFLE IN 38 YEARS.
THIS PAST THURSDAY MY COMPADRE OSCAR GARCIA AND I DROVE UP TO LA CHATA FOR THE DAY SO OSCAR COULD HUNT A NILGAI COW. WE HUNTED 1 FOR A FEW DAYS THANKSGIVING WEEK WITHOUT ANY LUCK. THE FEMALE NILGAI GET HUNTED HARD BY THE LESSEES (12 LESSEES @ 3 FEMALE NILGAI EACH) SO THEY SEE YOU AND GO, AND THEY GO QUICK. WE HUNT "SAFARI STYLE" BY DRIVING AROUND. WHEN WE GET TO A CORNER WE GET OFF AND DO A WALK AROUND.
THE MORNING HUNT WAS SLOW, SAW PLENTY OF BULLS BUT HARDLY ANY FEMALES. LESSEES DO NOT HAVE BULL TAGS AND THEY ONLY GET HUNTED BY THE OCCASIONAL PAYING AND GUIDED HUNTER. AFTER A LATE BREAKFAST WE HEADED OUT AGAIN AND EARLY AFTERNOON WE SPOTTED SOME NILGAI, I WENT DOWN THE RIGHT ROAD AND THEY STEPPED OUT, I MADE A QUICK CALL, MY COMPADRE WAS QUICK TO OPEN THE DOOR AND GET OFF A SHOT AND AS THE COW NILGAI TURNED TO RUN INTO THE BRUSH I SAW BLOOD ON HER SHOULDER. OSCAR WAS USING A GERMAN WEATHERBY IN 270 WM.
WE WENT UP TO THE AREA THEY WERE AT AND I FOUND GOOD BLOOD, FOLLOWED THE TRAIL A WAYS AND THERE SHE WAS. WOW!!! ARE THESE BABES BIG, HOLY CACA HOW ARE GONNA GET HER BACK TO THE ROAD? 2 GUYS ALONE CANNOT DRAG HER, ITS 1, 2, 3 AND PULL, SHE MOVES A COUPLE OF FEET, THEN 1, 2, 3 AGAIN. WE DID THAT FOR 30 YARDS OR SO UNTIL WE GOT TO WHERE ANY STRAPPING/ROPE I HAD WITH ME REACHED. THEN WE HOOKED UP TO A RING IN THE FRONT OF MY TRUCK (I HAD A CORN FEEDER ON THE REAR SO ANY PULLING HAD TO BE FROM THE FRONT) AND WOULD BACK-UP PULL A FEW YARDS ACROSS THE ROAD, GO FORWARD, RE-TIE, ETC. UNTIL WE GOT HER TO THE SANDY ROAD.
I AM WORKING ON A WINCHING SYSTEM FOR LOADING BIG ANIMALS IN THE BACK OF MY PICK-UP BUT IT IS NOT INSTALLED YET, SO THERE WAS NO WAY JUST THE 2 OF US COULD GET HER IN THE TRUCK, A BIG BUCK OR AOUDAD DOABLE, THIS COW NILGAI - TIME TO GET HELP. WE PULLED HER DOWN THIS ROAD, IN REVERSE (GOING BACKWARDS) FOR 1.5 MILES UNTIL WE GOT TO THE MAIN ROAD ON THE NORTH SIDE OF THE RANCH AND DROPPED HER THERE. THEN WE DROVE 3 MILES TO CAMP AND GOT 2 RANCH HANDS TO GIVE A HAND. GOT BACK TO THE COW, 2 GUYS ON TOP, 2 ON THE GROUND AND UP SHE WENT.
OSCAR IS 79, I AM 78, AND WE JUST HAD HAD A BLAST, HAD RECOVERED A BIG COW NILGAI BY OURSELVES, AND HELPED IN LOADING HER, AND FOR ME IT WAS MY FIRST NILGAI KILL AS A GUIDE. IT WAS A DAMN GOOD DAY.
