That looks amazing makes me want to get a snub nose double action just to dress it up with those!

I tend to do it myself and YES, sourcing the material is the problem. You northern guys have it way over us southern borderlands guys for that. Our average deer sheds are small and the limited Elk being harvested make that stuff mostly unobtainable trophy prizes. When found in large enough pieces I will work with old, white, sunbaked sheds as there is some really neat stuff hiding in there. A little old and crackly for some, but I like it. Looks at it's best when used on a somewhat well traveled gun. Much easier to find knife handle sized stuff both these knives are sheds, the 1911 grips are not. I wish you all best with the endeavor! But the problems sourcing the material alone would be enough to stop me cold in my tracks. If you have a steady source of fresh Elk, the sky's the limit.

Since I like nicely fit, even surfaces for my shooting guns. Antler has never been a favored material, it is nice for a BBQ gun when there is good bark and popcorn in it but for a shooter gun I’ve never been pleased with it. When it’s used and all the bark is removed, to me it looks ugly, I like the contrast and texture, but trying to get that and still have even sized panels rarely happens. On the little snubbies it’s probably easier to find or make matching sides, but even that can be disappointing. I just purchased a knife with one beautiful side and one F’ed up side, made me understand why no pics of knife were from both sides.

Sorry the knife wasn't what you'd hoped. Yeah, the smaller the gun the easier it is to find antler for it.

I should have known better but wanted the knife, and it was not expensive so, no biggie. Your grips on the snubs do look good to me, and keep a nice amount of bark on them!! The square butt Smith especially so.

Yeah, the smaller the gun the easier it is to find antler for it. Wow, that got me laughing. At least 3 times I bought the newer H&R solid frame 32L snubbies just because I could make antler grips for them,,,,,,, with my tiny little pieces. Imagine stag handled H&Rs? ??

I like antler stocks on my S&W revolvers. I prefer smooth or nearly smooth, no bark. I also prefer N frames so I am looking at crown pieces of antler or large, deer need not apply! Best of luck on your endeavor, if they appeal to me, I will be a customer. There are two other vendors who have my custom already. A third would not be a bad thing. Kevin

A set of round butt J frame grips would be cool in antler.

NMS... on those sun baked sheds, are you stabilizing them, or do you find they hold up ok to regular use???

NMS... on those sun baked sheds, are you stabilizing them, or do you find they hold up ok to regular use??? Actually both. Before I had the way to stabilize, I just went and made them. And they held up fine. But understand sheds found in the desert borderlands are 100 percent dry sunbaked things. Also, if unstabilized you must pay attention to make sure there is enough backing to support the escutcheons. If they are only sitting on a pithy center part, they will probably pull thru eventually. Nowadays I do stabilize them. They pick up a lot of weight and strength as the pith becomes a solid.

Imagine stag handled H&Rs? ?? I absolutely can.
OK , for tiny little piece stuff, I'll see your stag handled derringer and raise you a cow hoof handled derringer. Stuff works like horn and comes from the dog chew isle at the feed store.
