At 0840 Tuesday morning I had this young buck cruising through some thinned out pines in search of does. He made his way to my far right/behind me when I dropped the hammer. The shot was free handed, broad side, and at 40 yards. He mule kicked and stumbled for 50 yards and done. i was using, as titled, my OM Super Blackhawk….. I was shooting a 250gr powder coated Keith penta hollow point by Dick Thompson. It was pushed by 19.0gr of 2400 for a wicked combination. The bullet entered the right side tucked tight behind the shoulder and exited same on offside… The bullet showed rapid expansion upon entry with pedals shedding and shank completing the pass through. Entry… Exit… The heart was tenderized quite well, with massive damage to the onside… Once cleaning was done, butchering commenced… then preparation for the fire pit… (no consumption photos available)

Wow, I really love the autopsy pics. I enjoy seeing the load, bullet and damage so that we get a better understanding and idea of what to expect.

Wow, I really love the autopsy pics. I enjoy seeing the load, bullet and damage so that we get a better understanding and idea of what to expect. Thanks! I’m fairly new to shooting cast bullets - prolly only 6-7 years now. I’ve always been a jacket bullet kinda guy, but decided to give cast a try and thus lean to the cast shooters for advice. Since Dick Thompson does casting and has a little experience hunting with them, I use his advice wisely. This load combo, and every other cast load I’ve got from him. All the loads and bullets I’ve got from Dick has shot very well in the give handgun he advised for and all have performed well to this point (I may have 10-15 kills with cast with black bears and whitetails. For my style of hunting and areas hunted, I’ve come to really like the cast hollow points he produces - lots damage and short tracking. Although, I, and my son, use cast solids, I believe for thin skinned medium game, the cast hollow points are the way to go. I just love field testing.

Nice job Kim! I was tempted to go out guys morning but with a 5:30 leave time in the morning I just knew I’d find a buck and be in a world if hurt getting him taken care of before I fly out. Dick’s bullets just seem to want to fly through critters. That is one of the main reason I sent a ton of my bullet casting molds and j fits to Dick. I’m better off buying from him than doing it myself!

Kudos on a fine hunt, and the harvest of some excellent eating! And the pictures are great,, showing real results. And yes,, Dick does know a few things about casting & hunting.

Thanks, James and Sal. That hat has seen it’s better days, but still a great hat. I’ve completely worn out the leather sweatband - it’s gone! But, I’ll be in Texas for business the first two weeks in December and I’ve found a hatter not too far from where I’ll be, so hopefully I can get some repairs done.
