I have heard that from Gary Reeder also but nothing in their laws say that an optic is required and the minimum barrel length is 100mm. Some outfitters or PHs may have their own rules
Minimum barrel lengths for handgun hunting 22. (1) The following norms apply to minimum barrel lengths of handguns for the purpose of hunting-
(a) 100mm for- (i) centre fire single action revolver; (ii) centre fire double action revolver; (iii) rimfire single action revolver; and (iv) rimfire double action revolver. (b) 150rnm for- (i) centre fire single action break neck pistol for the hunting of- (aa) any furred game; and (bb) feathered game, including ostrich; (ii) rimfire single action break neck pistol for the hunting of- (aa) furred game up to and including the size of a rock hyrax; and (bb) feathered game; (iii) centre fire bo!t action pistol for the hunting of- (aa) furred game; and (bb) feathered game, including an ostrich; (iv) rimfire bolt action pistol for the hunting of- (aa) furred game up to and including the size of a rock hyrax; and (bb) feathered game; (v) centre fire falling block pistol for the hunting of- (aa) furred game; and (bb) feathered game, including an ostrich; and (vi) rimfire falling block pistol for the hunting of- (aa) furred game up to and including the size of a rock hyrax; and (bb) feathered game; and (c) 125mm for- (i) centre fire semi-automatic pistol; and (ii) rimfire semi-automatic pistol.
Minimum calibers for handgun hunting 23.
(1) The following norms apply to minimum calibers for revolvers- (a) a rimfire single or double action revolver for the hunting of-(i) furred game up to and including the size of a rock hyrax; and (ii) feathered game; (b) a centre fire single or double action revolver of less than .357 magnum caliber for the hunting of furred game larger than rock hyrax, up to and including the size of a grey duiker; and (c) a centre fire single or double action revolver of .357 magnum or larger caliber for the hunting of- (i) furred game larger than grey duiker; and (ii) ostrich.
(2) The following norms apply to minimum calibers for semi-automatic pistols- ( a) a rimfire semi-automatic pistol for the hunting of- (i) furred game up to and including the size of a rock hyrax; and (ii) feathered game; (b) a centre fire semi-automatic pistol smaller than .357 magnum or 357 Sig for the hunting of furred game larger than rock hyrax up to and including the size of a grey duiker; and (c) a centre fire semi-automatic pistol of .357 magnum or 357 Sig or larger for the hunting of- (i) furred game larger than the size of grey duiker; and (ii) ostrich.

What do you want it to do? Knowing full well that some guns just tend to like a bullet you didn't expect them to.
I tend to get a load for a gun and then if I want a load that does something different, I get a different gun.
My .480 typically sees 410 grain slugs at 1050 fps. I no longer have a .475L. The .480 will do 90% of the work of the .475, and the last 10%, I'll step up to the .500 JRH. (note: my .480 is in a mid frame Ruger Bisley) My .500 JRH typically runs 450's at 1300 fps. My .500 L runs 525's at 1050 fps. My .500 JRH 1.6" (.500 S&W) (if I ever get around to working up a load) is planned to run jacketed bullets as fast as they will go. Note: .500 S&W is 60 KSI, the .500 JRH 1.6" is recommended to stop at 50 KSI(ish), as the gain gets smaller pushing pressures much higher - but the gun will handle full house .500 S&W. My 500 L Max runs the 525's at 1350 fps.
I fell like all of these loads are pretty optimized for the cartridge and the platform.

My favorite load for the .480 Ruger was a 400 gr Cast Lee WFN at 900-1000 FPS. Works well on deer and pigs and doesn’t beat the crap out of you or the gun

With a 454 and a 460, I'd take the 475 off the table. If you don't want to cast, or use cast bullets, the JRH has the component edge. Hawk makes jacketed .510 bullets, just sayin'.. Still need to know, what do you want to do with this big bore ? Maybe I missed it..

Ok, see range and deer woods use. I'd have to choose the 500L.

I personally own a 500 JRH BFR... I could easily do a 500 Linebaugh, as I also load for 50-70 government, & have a custom Encore Pistol in that caliber... I'd just recommend to keep your eyes open for all & go the easiest & most economical route into a 50... Mine run, a custom 5 shot Super Blackhawk in 50 A.E. , the 500 JRH, in my BFR, & 50-70 in an Encore handgun... also have a custom 500 JRH Encore carbine also have a couple 475's but seem to like the 50's more better

500 Linebaugh in a 9" for Africa or 5.5" anywhere else that doesn't have a stupid barrel length rule. For the animals that you need to STOP now before they stomp, maul, and eat you. I have yet to find a country in Africa that requires a long barrel for hunting. South Africa has a restriction that is around 4 inches. I have contacted several outfitters in different countries and they have all said my 5 inch .500 Linebaugh is fine Namibia, last time I went 7years ago.

The only countries you can hunt with a handgun in Africa now are Zimbabwe, South Africa and Mozambique

And Zimbabwe is nice enough to charge you a fee of $1500 per handgun for the opportunity

I’ve used a FA83, .454 on just about every critter on earth, efficiently and safely. Just about 40 years now. It had good range, penetration, and easy to down load. Ammo and components are pretty easy to find as well. I have MANY of the other larger caliber revolvers also, I just seem to grab the .454 as my go to gun.

Since I was big into .45s already, I skipped the .475s and went to the .50s. I wanted a .500 Linebaugh so bad for a long time, but eventually "settled" for the JRH, and I'm really glad I did. A 440 grain at 1400 fps or so is about all I can handle and shoot remotely accurately in the BFR platform, and downloading that bullet to 1000 fps recoils like a hot .45 Colt but will still penetrate nearly everything. If you ever get a .500 S&W, you can share some bullets with the JRH and your AE. I got my BFR secondhand...it has a FA front sight and a custom Bisley-like grip mod from Jack Huntington himself (done before the factory grip option was available).

His modification looks a hell of a lot better than the factory banana grip.
