I’ve become the very happy new owner of a Ruger New Model Blackhawk in .41 Remington Magnum! It was a pawn shop find while I was on the road for work in Rhode Island. I quickly snapped it up and had it shipped home to my LGS here in Wisconsin. I know they’re out there, but this was the first one I’ve seen in .41 Mag. It appears to have been fired VERY little as there are barely even rotation marks on the cylinder. I really became a fan of the .41 when my dad bought a S&W Model 657 in the late 80’s. It’s a very shootable cartridge that gets far too little credit. My only problem with my new Blackhawk is the grips. They’re just the stock black plastic. I have decent sized hands so I can barely get my pinkie of my shooting hand on the grip. It’s not a heavy recoiling gun, but it would be nice to have something a little more substantial. Anyone have any experience with anything slightly larger or more hand filling? Thanks in advance! I’m looking forward to gleaning some single action knowledge from this board!

When I was much younger I preferred vendor grips, however for the last decade or so I've had most of my single action grips custom-made by TONY KOJIS who makes them thicker to my specifications.

Chad Robinett at Chigs Grips will also make you a thicker set of grips custom fitted to your frame.

The above mentioned grip makers will do you a fine job with something a little thicker and you could go with a flat bottom also.
Sounds like what you have is the standard XR3-RED/ Plow. Unless you have smaller hands, your pinky is always going to get tucked. There are grips out there where the maker will add to the bottom. This will let you park the pinky.
FWIW: Mr. Elmer Keith didn’t worry about the pinky.
Other options are to change out the Grip Frame to a Super or Hunter or Bisley.

All of the New Model .41 Magnum Blackhawks use the XR3-RED grip frame while the Ruger black plastic grips as far as I can remember were only found on the XR3 grip frames. So I am wondering what you really do have!

Congrats on the .41 mag! Chigs, sk grips, Lone star custom grips, and rowen grips would be good choices

According to the serial number Ruger puts it as a 2018 model.

On my .41 mag Blackhawk I use the extended grips from Texas Grips, but I like the Bisley grip frame better and my plan is to change the grip frame and let Chad make some grips for me. The extended Texas Grips wrap under the bottom of the grip frame and give you room for your pinky. Other grip makers may make them also but I don’t know.

So I am wondering what you really do have! The current production is shipped with plastic grips, for at least the past few years anyway. Probably cost-saving measure. Rough texture too.

My XR3's were more rubbery than the plastic on the XR-3RED.

If it's an xr3 frame, someone swapped out the original for it.

Get a set of custom grips. LSCG (Lone Star Custom Grips) is an excellent source. Zane,, is a member here,, and goes by lscg.
If it's a NM, and has a NEW XR3 grip frame,, swapping for an XR3-RED might help. Or, you could also swap out the entire grip frame & grips with either a factory Super Blackhawk g/f & grips. OR,, even swap out for one of Ronnie Wells grip frames.
But if you seek to keep the expenses down,, first determine which grip frame you have,, (XR3 or XR3-RED.) Then look for a set of factory wood grips to try.
As for the pinky on the grip,, many of us learned to place the pinky under the g/f for comfort & control.

If it's an xr3 frame, someone swapped out the original for it. OLD MODEL XR3 WOUDS NOT FIT WITHOUT MODIFICATION.

So I am wondering what you really do have! Ruger is putting the black plastic checkered grips on some of the newer guns. My friend just got a new model 41 mag with the plastic grips. They are very skinny compared to the laminated wood grips.
