Range maps often on the conservative side as to current ranges. Also, bears can't read maps. Recall seeing grizz sow and yearling cubs in Montana years ago. Was exciting, and that an understatement.

These maps are a little different based on who puts them out. And agreed. They can't read the maps. Look at the current maps (which become dated quickly) and I know some in Montana would say the map doesn't reflect where they are. Human population is displacing them and attracting them all at the same time.

I'd guess wolf range maps the worst, wrong. I remember arguing on the phone with wildlife official about a bobcat in our rural hood in the '70's. Denied, denied, denied. Which adds up to a lie, for me.

In my business, (ADC work,) I get frequent bear calls. I'm not allowed to deal with bears, due to the laws.
In the last few weeks,, the calls have been a lot more frequent. Summer is winding down,, food is a premium, and bears can & will go to where they can get "the most for less." Heck, I was on the phone with a good friend a week ago,, and while we were talking,, (it was about 4 pm) he suddenly said; Dern there's that bear again. He went to making enough noise that the bear left in the direction he wanted it to go & not towards any other houses. I was chuckling at him during all this. Daytime sightings have risen a lot lately,, including a momma bear & 2 cubs who swam up to the local town beach, among the tourists & all, mid-day. It was posted on FB by several folks. I had (3) bear sightings/calls that day myself.
Encroachment into their territory, coupled with the restrictions on hunting, have allowed the populations to grow a lot. ANd yes,, they can & will adapt to living in & around people. Encounters can & will happen.

My son lives in coastal Mississippi and has killed a few pythons and a boa. They love the swamps and no real winter.
Thing about those "How far will they spread?" maps is they forget about animal's being able to adapt.
I live 15 minutes away from Charlotte and see bears a few times a month. They've been spotted in several town parks around here. One guy in Gastonia even came outside to go to work one morning and found a cub in his car. Bet that was hard on the interior. Count on Mommy was somewhere close.

About 15yrs ago ? When our wildlife folks still said we had no bears, 9 miles south of me was an incident. A young woman and her mom heard noise in the entry way between garage and kitchen. Went and found a black bear had come into garage, (door was open) and tore right thru the screen door and was trying to figure out how to open the frig.. With the screaming that came next, the bear ran over into the living room. Mom ran to other end of house. Daughter got a package of baloney out of the frig and made a baloney trail leading back out of the house. It worked. No blood shed, minimal damage. We don't need a map to show the new range of coyotes since they came back. They are EVERYWHERE.

I live in central Idaho right at the base of the panhandle. Clearwater wilderness to the east and the Red Ives district of the St Joe National Forest to the north. People here call it the Palouse prairie, where the Appaloosa horse comes from. This spring we had a cow moose and her calf in our front yard several times. The wolves, and they are not "gray wolves" as they are supposed to be. They are big 100-150 pounds, fast and smart. They make a coyote look dumb. The moose were in town avoiding a pack that was moving through. They travel in packs and kill for pleasure. Here they have decimated elk herds, moose populations, and cattle attacks are fairly common. I don't worry about black bears, grizzlies are not seen here locally, often. But the wolves I worry about. Never go to the woods unarmed. Always a heavily loaded GP100 or a 69 2.75" with strong medicine in the cylinder.
LOBBY AGAINST WOLF INTRODUCTIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
