The Sheriff Still Has It

My old buddy, sheriff Russel Cottle showed up last week from Oklahoma planning to help me out with some Rock Chucks that needed thinning out & he did a bang up job using both Contender single shots & my 32-20 Buckeye. The old sheriff can still shoot that's for sure, making some hits way out there.
We had a great time riding around in the Jeep, swapping stories & driving through fields nice & slow as we glassed for the Eagle eyed Chucks that always saw us before we saw them. They are fun to hunt because of their eyesight, it's amazing!
We kind of lost track of our totals each day but I think on day one Russel took 20 or 21 just using my scoped 32-20 Buckeye & a 113 gr cast HP, he knows his way around a revolver, having packed one for many years as a lawman. Every day was pretty much a repeat of the first, we did gather up a few for photo's but it's time consuming & many of them fall down in the lava crevices where you can't retrieve them without a fishing pole & a big treble hook.
By Friday I had to leave & Russel headed back towards Raton for the Holiday but we had a great time, had some good food & lots of shooting, what else could you ask for.

A fella could look a long time and never find a better friend or host than my amigo, Dick Thompson and his wife Ruth Ann. He hauled me around the countryside and gave me the majority of the shots, even handed me his 32-20 to use with his favorite handload. And fed me, too! I did manage to use the 2 contenders I'd brought on the longer shots. Dick killed the biggest old rock chuck I've seen. It's face was totally white and until we walked up to retrieve it we both swore it was a badger! Many thanks to Dick for a great time.

It's always a treat watching an experienced gunman work with a revolver, years of know how just never seem to go away. This was the 3rd time Russ has been up to visit & we always have a great time together. I think he was ready to get out of Oklahoma for a few days & I was glad to see him again, we always get along great & the time passed all too soon. I thought I had a photo of that big boy but I guess Russ must have it. It has to be a 15 lb. Chuck.
