Looks like all kinds of fun. I never really got comfortable around, on horses. My Sis was whipper-in in a Hunt Club and timber raced, steeple chase raced. At 70, in another community, she has taken up polo ! She made the effort a few times and got me up on one of her 4 legged ferrari's . Wasn't a good match. In early '80's was backpacking into the Bob from S.E. side. In and up the the chinese wall. On way in a couple wranglers and a pack string passed us on their way out. Warned us of grizzly sow and yearlings. We saw them the next evening. I also like seeing the mules and figure them and me might have gotten along better.

At one time I had 24 but down to 13 hay burners now. Kept a mule a for about a year but we never really connected. He would try to connect from time to time by kicking but I was fortunate. Knew not to turn my back on him….😂

One of the jobs I had growing up was working at a farm and feed store. I saw many people come and go spending hundred (late 80s, early 90s) and I couldn't understand why people would spend that kind of money on an animal that doesn't do anything. I also dated a girl who's dad worked himself to the bone to pay for her hobby. I said to myself.....never. But when I started going west and seeing the utility of mountain horses and ranch horses my opinion has changed. I'm no cowboy or equestrian but I can stay on and put in miles if I know an elk could be in my future.

Kev, Seems we had the same upbringing and thoughts! I grew up on a ranch and had no option but to tend cattle and horses! I said I'd never own either!! Learned as I got older... Never say never when it comes to pursuing Elk! Great thread, thanks.
