With the recent post about the S&W 696/69 I thought I'd give a preview of an upcoming project... I'm sure they're both great evolvers and would serve well or...you could get the best of all worlds and have a square butt L-Frame .44sp mountain gun built! Scrounging all these parts was NOT easy or a fast proposition but the finished product will put a smile on this man's face. Can even have one with a Ti cylinder if one wants. That 5 shot arm was really hard to find but, that's part of the "hobby". Rebored 686 mountain gun barrel by Al Seigrist...thanks to a generous Forum member.

THAT is a gun I am highly envious of.
THAT is the gun Smith SHOULD have built.
THAT is a gun which might even be worth what they are asking for them today.
I have everything I need - more. I have everything I really want.
Still, if something like that were available, I'd be selling stuff and saving up.

That makes sense.......I just got a 296 and debating where it will end up after a it’s been through The Transmogrification.....
A 69 didn’t hold to the original plan......ideas like the OP did throws a monkey wrench in the plan quickly.......
The two piece barrel on the 296,69,329 make that part easier. And I believe the barrel thread is larger on the 44 L frames.
The titanium cylinder could be swapped out for a steel cylinder. A lil more weight.
Transmogrification is a tricky process.......

The build is more than half the (fun ) reason to do projects!! This sounds like a winner Greg...

I've been looking for one of those square butt 29-4s for years now. I have the 629 mtn gun barrel to do the switch but they're super hard to find. In my case impossible... Honestly I haven't been on the hunt lately and round->square Culinas on a 629-4 mountain gun could get me about the same thing...
