My only one is an Encore that I bought new with the .223 Super 14 barrel. I've since added a .308 barrel with break, and a Bullberry 10" bull barrel in 44 magnum topped with a Leupold 2x. With the Bullberry I took my "44 Buck": 44 magnum, shot at 44 yards, 44 minutes into the season on opening day. He was a big, old, stinky brute, just how I like 'em! ![](https://i.imgur.com/D2hbRMa.jpg)

The 7x30 Waters was an invention by one of my reloading heros, Ken Waters. He follows only Phil Sharpe in my book and not by much. You can "Improve" it, but hard to make it better. It's excellent in rifles and pistols. I know! Also, Ken Waters was a big influence on my reloading habits. He's the reason I have "to" many powders and bullets! Constantly looking for and finding pet loads for each cartridge. And, I already know one cannot have to many powders, bullets, or time to read and reread Ken Waters 1040 pages of Pet Loads from his handloader articles! Rest in peace Ken crash87

I have had close to 30 different Contender barrels over the years, both factory chamberings and wildcats. My two "go to" barrels are a 6.5 Bullberry Improved and a 257 Raptor. For larger calibers, I like the Encore platform.

For all medium game, the 14" .257 JDJ. For small game like squirrels, the 10" .22 LR. For truly big game like the various buffalo and large bears, as well as African game where a variety of species might be encountered, the 14" or 12.5" .375 JDJ I was hunting on the Y0 20+ years ago with my same guide from previous times and this particular time I had my 14" .257 JDJ. He told me they had a problem as they had seen a $200 Corsican Ram running with a herd of $2000 Red Sheep and he needed to be taken out. He had confidence in what I could do with the .257 and the problem was solved. This is my third favorite JDJ cartridge behind the 6.5 and .375.

Living in Rochester, NH where TC "was" till S&W stole them, there were a lot of barrels floating around the local gun shows cheap...
For big game under 100 yards I have a 10" .41 Magnum barrel that will usually run a 170 grain Sierra JHC or 200 grain Remington JHP. The 170s are powered by 26.0 grains of H110 and run 1800 fps from the 10" tube. If I need more, there is a 14" Bellm .41/.445 SM (same as a Reeder GNR #2) that will run a 255 cast at 2k fps...
At one time I had a 14" .309 JDJ barrel... .30 caliber necked down .444 Marlin...that was a great long range big game round...

Bob, are you sure that was a 4" barrel...... I think the bullet would be sticking out the end of the barrel wouldn't it??
