Anyone work with this round? I have a chance to buy a Ruger No.1 in 405 and wondered how they shoot? Bullet selection seems limited. Wondering if you can shoot heavy 41 mag bullets in them at reduced vel.

Glen Fryxell has one. He has been loading his with cast bullets, but for specifics you need to ask him.
I am sure he will along any time now.....

I have a stainless No. 1 in 405 and really like it. I've primarily shot Hornady's 300 grain round nose over 3031. Accuracy has been good. ...and yes, you can shoot reduced load 0.411 cast bullets in them. -Lee www.singleactions.com

I shoot a 300 gr. cast W/gas check in my 1895 Winchester. The bullet also shot just fine in my #1 before I sold it. I use IMR 3031 powder.

Buy it! Too me the #1 in .405 is a true classic combination. I finally got mine but have yet to shoot it yet. I feels so good though. Buy it!

Well I bought it. Now the question is to scope or not to scope. Any loads you guys like in particular?

I shoot the Hornady 300 out of my .405, I'm going to order some of the Mt. Baldy 310 gr FNGC to try. I didn't scope mine.

I put a scope on mine and that is the reason I ended up selling the rifle. It was just to heavy to lug around the mountains in Utah where I hunt. Without the scope, the distances were to far to shoot with open sights. Otherwise, I really liked the rifle.

I put a 1.5 - 4.5x Bushnell Banner on mine. The open sights are nice too, but I like to shoot distance. Favorite load is 55.5 of 3031 under Hornady's 300 grain round nose. -Lee www.singleactions.com

A low power scope may just be the ticket.
LEE - what sort of velocity does your load give?

Well I shot the rifle and I am hooked. Tried 56 grains of IMR3031. Stout load but it hit well. Only have open sights for now so not sure how it will group at 100 yards. Thanks for the help and I will post more updates later.
