I picked up a 5 screw 4 inch 357 today at the LGS. All matching numbers except grips.sn is 319?? any idea of date of manufacture and were these considered M-27 or M-28's...Thanks in advance for the help! Last Friday August 26th Pick this girl back up from Andy Horvath's shop ...She was re-chambered to a 44 spec,1991 DX 5 inch full underlug barrel installed new partridge front sight brass insert, org rear sight opened up. Then installed a target hammer an target trigger finished off with a set of 1955 presentation S&W grips, slightly rounded ( Trigger, hammer , an grips came from Robb Barnes) Then Andy finished off with a satin blue finish...She is a dream to shoot an fits the hand like a fine leather glove...Shooting 7.5 grn of unique /250 grn Keith style bullet...If anyone can receive pics I will send to post!! Thanks Frank

Very easy to tell one from the other as model 27s are bright blue while model 28s are Matte blue. Also the 27 has checkering/striations on the rear sight and barrel rib. Five-screws ended in 1956. Your reported serial number does not make sense unless it was made before 1950 as beginning that year serial numbers had a pre-fix. Also all Highway Patrolman/Model 28s have a pre-fix serial number. Serial number you give makes it a Registered Magnum from the 1930s with a price tag of several thousands of dollars. Patton bought his in 1935.

Yup Taffin nailed it a usual.
The quick check is if the top strap is checkered or not and the bluing. Post a pic and we will know in a jiffy.

Pictures please. I'm dying here for just a peek. Prescut Didn't the Registered Magnum turn into the Model 27? REGISTERED MAGNUM .357s AVAILABLE IN THE MID TO LATE '30s; THE .357 MAGNUM FROM 1935 TO 1957; MODEL 27 THEREAFTER. LONG ACTION UNTIL ABOUT 1950, THEN THE SHORT ACTION. 8-3/4" AVAILABLE WITH THE ORIGINAL FOR AWHILE THEN CHANGED TO 8-3/8"

Didn't the Registered Magnums have REG as the prefix of the serial number?

NO. THE NUMBER IN THE YOKE CUT WAS DIFFERENT THAN THE SERIAL NUMBER AND WAS REG XXXX. REG 1 WENT TO J. EDGAR HOOVER; REG 2 TO PHIL SHARPE
