Question of efficiency and diminishing returns with specialty pistols comes up often. Bottom line is the same as rifles, yes efficiency goes down but performance goes up with bigger cases.
Your 6.5 PRC pistol can now perform like a 6.5 CM rifle, but that's the nature of short barrels.
IMO, the 6.5 PRC is a perfectly good round but ammo and brass and dies are more difficult to find now than 6.5-284, but that's for the handloader to consider. Ballistically they're equivalent.
Of rounds in that general size, the 284 Win is by far the best choice. Lapua makes brass now and 7mm bullet selection still beats 6.5mm. Barrel life is much, much better with the 284 than hot 6.5mm rounds.
If you're having an XP built, you may want to look into a Rem 700 clone. Lots of high end options there that don't need any kind of trueing.

I think I have come to my senses and will opt of the 6.5-284 since good brass is easily obtainable (relatively speaking). I am now in search of a suitable donor XP to go with. A couple of the smiths made some good points on why to use the XP action and true it instead of the Borden or similar. I am going to start grabbing components to lock myself in, yeah right

The 284 Win in an XP is a hammer. Noticeable difference than a 6.5 for sure. I finally shot mine recently and have been really impressed. Have buddies with 6.5x284 and they love them! 284 6.5

Heck of a round in a great shooting gun.

Do you have to remove the bolt to remove a loaded round?

Mine is throated for heavy bullets. Great for performance, less good for removing loaded rounds. When loaded off the lands, I have to pull the bolt. There's a button on the bottom of the rear of the stock that is the bolt release.
Neither very convenient or inconvenient. Just the nature of putting a 284 case with heavy bullets in a short action. I could seat my bullets slightly deeper and eject them fine.
The single shot follower and coned bolt are great for quickly loading for a follow up shot. I don't know if XPs have coned bolts or if bullets ever snag when trying to load quickly since I've never owned one.

Normal XP are not coned. My HS Precision is coned like yours.

I suppose if you're having an XP built you can use a coned bolt and have the barrel cut for the cone. I should think for a hunting gun that would be worthwhile. At that point, consider a custom action or keep your eyes open for an HS.
An XP-100R is the better bet for an XP if rear grip is an option.
