One of the things my son and daughter have wanted to while here is drag me out of the dark ages as far as my wood shop work is concerned. Ashly’s dad owns a convenience /sporting goods/ gas station and she set up his store website and social media structure. They both thought it would be pretty easy to do the same for me so I could find homes for stuff that comes out of the “dust cave”.
We had a website developed for the pumping business but I never progressed to things such as Instagram, Venmo payment processing etc. To say that the “bright lights” of the new marketing can make a fossilized pumpers eyes glaze would be an understatement! Still, I need to either grab my technology sunglasses and move forward or stop building stuff. I’m running out of room. The problem is I love giving old flooring boards, retired tables and aged barrels a second lease on life as new furniture and decor pieces!
So, I guess the old biology axiom IS true. When our environment changes (aka retirement) we can either move, adapt or die! I guess I will try the adapting part first!

Amen. Sigh, mostly I just want this modern world to go away and leave me alone. Wife and I find it difficult, not intuitive to us at our age, and no kids/grand kids for trustworthy support. It does make it safer for thieves, they no longer have to fear your physical wrath. They can stay in mommies basement and use the neighbors wifi to steal. That's progress ?

I don’t do stuff as large as furniture, I do knives, fishing floats and lures. They basically become gifts for friends and gratuity for guides and outfitters. Having dealt with selling stuff on GB, performing gun modifications for fellow competitive shooters that are clueless and dealing with the idiocy that is out there, both with work and buyers, I have zero desire to engage “those” people.

The pumping business would make for an interesting Instagram page.

You know Cas, it would have been GREAT to have done Instagram when I had the pump business! Like I told my customers, the pumper dude sees it ALL! Some of the clients reactions when they look in their own tank and see certain items can be priceless! Sharing about stuff like a 4" glass sight window breaking at the 1000 gallon level when there is 3000 gallons in the tank and you as the owner have to jump up on the back of the truck and play like the little Dutch boy with his fist in the hole in the dike would have been another interesting post!

I think you’ll do fine. Youre a people person whether you know it or not and meeting new customers will be fun. There will always be some that make you crazy but you’ll appreciate the good ones. Plus, youve got help!

Some of the clients reactions when they look in their own tank and see certain items can be priceless! I would tell the story that when you "chemically treat" a pool, the reaction of the sulfuric acid releases hydrogen sulfide gas, which many times would cause... um... certain balloon like object to partially inflate and float to the top, often causing embarrassment and one time, anger in a customer. Apparently there shouldn't have been any in there and he no doubt later had a serious talk with his wife or daughter.
