You might try finding a DO that specializes in Osteopathic Manipulation. They can order proper testing, prescribe medications and still do the the things that Chiropractors can do.

I put 2 stress fractures in each of my lowest 2 vertebrae in 9th grade playing basketball. They healed fast enough due my age. I was told then that that injury would come back to haunt me and oh yeah, did it. The edge healed rough, and when the muscle heats, swells, gets rubbed by the rough edges. lifelong issue. Arthritis showed up there some time back too. Then disc bulged 2 springs ago. A few things learned. I like 2nd shift, a bit more time in morning before I exert myself helps. Ease into the day. I like vehicles with taller and bigger doors. The Subaru Forester has bigger and taller doors than anything else it's size. Mini-vans and trucks better. When I'm hurting, I can bend a bit, or I can lift my legs a bit, but not both. So taller doorways, and higher doorways are best. Suspenders to help take weight and allow belt to be a notch looser helps. Lighter footwear helps.

Thank you all for the comments and recommendations. When I got in my inversion table as soon as my left hip started taking some pull the fire came back. I will have to rest a week or better before getting back into it. My Doc referred me to a spinal neurosurgeon to accurately test and really find out what the problem is. In the mean time it is pills and rest. Thank God the ranch is kinda at an idle right now. But my pain is still bad enough I am not going deer hunting this weekend. (Which sucks.) Good thing is I am getting to sit in my big office chair and piddle with some of my firearms that need some tuning and parts changing.

I hope you have a good outcome with your back, and I think the referral to a neurosurgeon is the right course of treatment. I have had a pinched nerve in my lower back and one in my neck. Both were debilitating, and I went through the whole process of chiropractor, spinal shots, pain meds, etc. Finally had surgery in both cases with excellent outcomes. The surgeries and recoveries were no big deal really, and now I am almost completely pain free and can do anything my 67 year self can handle. I killed a buck from a climbing stand with a .454 this week and got him out of the woods by myself. I know anything is possible with surgeries, but consider that option if your neurosurgeon recommends it and get well quick.

I had a bad sciatica a couple years ago... I'm not a chiropractor user... I've tried a few times, never had the kind of injury or pain that they could help with... with the bad sciatica, I tried the chiropractor for a couple weeks, he put me on a tens unit, for most of my sessions ... I actually think it was getting worse... finally went to my general doctor ( he knows me & my body )... said I likely had an inflamed disk, pushing on my spinal ( that's why the pain goes down your legs ) he recommended I take 3 times the printed dosage on some over the counter Ibuprofen for specifically 2 weeks, & no longer ( taken with food )... in one day I was feeling much better, & in 2 weeks I was completely back to normal...
I've shared this advice with a couple others, who received much relief...
obviously if your back is destroyed, or you are prone to ulcers, or allergic, this is not going to work for you... so YMMV

Does an MRI show anything that could be hitting the nerve?
PT has helped me with Sciatic pain due to an inflamed piriformis muscle. It also helped me deal with nerve pain that was caused by disk fragments-eventually the fragments moved away from the nerve.
An MRI will hopefully help to determine the cause and then help a physical therapist determine what needs to be done.

Suggest advil for inflammation, & an MRI - to find out what's really going on. Then a referral to a GOOD PT, or "maybe" a chiro.
My back is trashed from top to bottom. Lumbar is the worst. Paying for my sins as a young man, I guess. Hard physical labor, with a bad fall - as icing on the cake.
Agree, sciatic nerve pain can be borderline unbearable, & today, unless you've got a compound fracture, most MD's won't prescribe any type of effective pain medication. Can't sit, stand, walk, lie down in any position. Nada. Had an episode about 18 years ago (just a few years older than you at the time), that finally put me in the ER. Ended up with a referral to a really good PT - that showed me how to stretch. Little at a time - with a good anti-inflammatory med, & after a few weeks, was reasonably under control. She cut me loose with the advice to "Listen to my body". Been a twice a day (every day) routine since.
Got to stress the anti-inflammatory angle though. As long as the surrounding tissue (& nerve) is inflamed from a disk or vertebrae alignment shift, the stretching - & I suspect inversion as well, can be only minimally effective. Problem is though, long term anti-inflammatory use is REALLY hard on your body. Stomach, liver, & heart. Probably more too. Most cardiologists will tell ya' "Just say NO!"
For what it's worth, my best advice to you, is to get seriously pro-active about getting the ongoing problem under long term control. You're a young guy yet, with a lotta' years ahead of you, & from the sounds of it, livin' in a great place. It's all about quality of life. Don't hesitate to contact me, if I can assist in some way. Had to have surgery on mine. Numb fingers, couldn't sleep in the bed, couldn't drive, etc. Not fun and I feel your pain (as it appears many others do too).

My sciatica and numbing + tingling feet magically disappeared when I spent a week on my knees, hunched over, installing 1200 sq-ft of floor tile.
I am told that the work strengthened my back muscles and thus helped straighten/align the vertebrae. The pain is there when the vertebrae are not straight and aligned. Stronger back muscles get it aligned and support it to be straight.
When my back starts giving me problems these days, I exercise my back more and the pain goes away. I do reverse leg lifts + general grounds/manual labor.

3 x 20min ice packs, 20 on, 20 off 20 on ect, hydration level, stretching excersizes from Chiro and muscle relaxers, anti-inflams/IBU.
Find a good chiro who will do imaging to diagnose the
Stay away from the heat which aids inflamation.

Spent the night in my bed last night for the first time since Sunday! Still waking up hurting like hell, but I have been trying to walk the sidewalks around my house at least once a day but as many times as I can. I still have to be careful bending over to pick something up. Looks like I am not going deer hunting this weekend.

I know surgery isn’t always the answer but…..
Just had (8 weeks) a micro discectomy on L4/L5 after nerve pain got so bad I couldn’t take it. I injured my back at 15 and have just lived with it for 36 years. This time was more than I could stand. Narcotics and muscle relaxers every 4-6 hours was not even numbing the pain. The nerve pain was GONE when I woke up from surgery.
IF it gets to the point you are having trouble with your junk or bowels you will have to have surgery.

Last night I had an attack that seemed to last 10 days but it was less than 10 minutes. Every muscle in my left leg locked up at once. Every muscle from my toes to my pelvis was in a constant charlie-horse. I was praying for death. I still cant feel the top of my foot. All day I have been guessing where I am putting my left foot resulting in a lot of short steps and missteps. I hope this new doctor knows what he is doing.

What I learned: x-rays won't show what's really going on. You need a good MRI to see the true story.
I had pain running down my low back like lightning through my left leg to the heel of my foot. Couldn't drive a car with a manual clutch because I couldn't depress the clutch pedal to shift gears.
Chiropractor did help, but what kept it away was exercises and stretches... NOT yoga; no bending over and touching your toes. That actually made my L4-L5 even worse. Lay flat on your back, feet on the floor with knees raised up. Take turns picking up one foot and crossing over, put your ankle against the top of your knee and then stretch to that side. Alternate to the other side and stretch/exercise both sides. The pain went away very quickly and rarely returns.
Now if only exercises would work that well on my neck!

You definitely need more workup, but short of an ER visit for CT/MRI and possible neurosurgery consult, a trip to urgent care might get you some injectable anti-inflammatories and steroids. ER would be best, but I hate to saddle anyone with an ER bill and unfortunately you're never guaranteed the workup or treatment you'd like, or that their findings call for more immediate intervention. Otherwise, for sure call your doc Monday and let them know of your worsening condition.
