Sunday we got a lot of early snow, maybe 6" in my front yard, probably another 6" or so in the mountains just outside of town. Many of you that have been here know that the mountains are very close to town. Yesterday I went for a short drive & almost got a buck, he walked behind a bush before I could get on him at about 50-55 yds or so, lucky him. I had the custom Blackhawk 45 auto rim almost ready to break the silence. Anyway, today I went again & saw a big herd of deer but they were perhaps 12-15 hundred yds off, I didn't range them, there was no way to close the distance. They were out in the middle of a huge grain field that had recently been harvested & there was no way for me to get any where near them. The only way to get close to these guys would be to get there early tomorrow & get set up before they started coming out to feed.... Above them, if you can see in the photo's are about 20 head of elk, cows, calves & bulls, both small bulls & big boys! I'm taking the photo's from a long way off with my cell phone but the dark objects you see in the grain field are critters! First deer & then elk after the scare the deer out of the field. Sorry for the poor photo's. There are 2 dandy bulls on the top sky line. First photo is my front yard Sunday! Second photo is an awful lot of elk tracks crossing the road I'm driving on! Dick

Great pics & makes me wish I was a visitin'! I watch the weather,, and I saw last night,, the snow. Made a comment to Miss Penny that y'all had snow. She gave me a dirty look & said y'all could keep the snow. Now,, go whack a deer. I've already got one this year,, catch up!

I saw that weather pattern on the weather channel and was wondering.. We are probably about 3 weeks out, on first snow.

I'm jealous of that white stuff (I think). I've seen what I consider deep snow only a few times in my life. Georgia and South Carolina isn't the area for it I suppose.

I would rather have the white stuff instead of rain, it's really been slick on the back roads! I've seen a lot of deer & elk in the last week but didn't drop the hammer on anything, just small bucks so I decided not to shoot one. I can't hunt elk until next week but I've probably seen 200 or more. The snow has already pushed them down more than usual. I'm hoping the ground freezes or it's going to be very, very slick & you don't want to get stuck in the back country around here, cell phone coverage is very iffy! I've done a lot of walking to get cell phone coverage a few times. The good news is, 5 of my grandson's got bucks, one of them for the first time, he was pretty proud.

Send snow to the piedmont of NC please!! We haven't seen a decent snow in years. I recall growing up.in the 60s with fairly regular snows. Maybe my memory is fading.

Ed, congratulations to your son & his new bride when they get married Saturday. I hope she has been north of Boerne a ways or she might get in her first snow ball fight!

Dick, My middle son is getting married Saturday here at the house in the Texas Hill Country then they are heading off to our place outside Sandpoint for their honeymoon. He is looking forward to lighting the stove up north. There going to miss the wet weather, but it will be clear and cool . 20’s at night, and 40’s during the day up here. Perfect weather for hiking around the Pack river tomorrow. They might just fall in love with the beauty of the Mountain Forests and lakes.

We've been getting rain in town the last 2 days & snow just out of town. Dang it, I hate it when the snow runs those elk right down into town & I don't have to go up to 8,000 ft to find them! I have a cow elk tag & it opens November 1st and runs until the end of December and I'm going to do something I haven't done in 50 years. Try to take that cow elk with a jacketed bullet, just to see if it's possible. I've heard they will do it so I'm going to give it a try. James from Jersey & buddy Bill Fowler over in Colorado both gave me some Hornady 210 gr XTP's for the 41 magnum back when I was in a little bit of a tissy trying to figure out why my FA wouldn't shoot my beloved cast bullets. I finally figured it out (seating depth) but just to tell those two guys thanks I'm going to use some of those bullets they sent me. I'll pack them in the 10" FA & my iron sighted belt gun will be my bisley 480 & the lovely 387 gr HP, powder coated of course. Just a few more days & it's "game on". Anybody want to come along for the ride!! I might shoot a Montana white tail first though.
