Although I've got many whitetail kills with other handguns this one hasn't had the right opportunity. I hope to remedy that very soon. I cut a lot of hair off a coyote heading directly away from me offhand several years ago at 80 yards but I didn't kill him. It knows how to hunt and I shoot it well so whitetails better beware. I missed the coyote with a 400 gr Hornady but have been shooting 325s lately.

A 325 grain pill is powerful whitetail medication.....

Very nice - should do the trick.
Has Ruger completely done away with the target gray finish? I always liked it.

I like the target gray too. Makes sense for a field, hunting piece. COR can tell you I've been known to apply some camo tape to my S.S. field guns.

Should be a good choice. I was primarily carrying a 357mag for the smaller deer here in NC, but after a run in with a pretty unhappy mommy bear last year, I have been carrying the 500L with 355gr. At 1600fps the impact is impressive. What velocity are you getting?

From what I've read the main complaint is that it showed wear too soon. I guess if you compare it to plain old stainless I suppose it would eventually, but in the case of mine it only amounts to some very light edge silvering. Others just didn't like it.
It is my second Ruger with that finish. The other was a Ruger 77/22 HB varmint 22 bolt action that looked awesome in it's laminated stock.

At 1600fps the impact is impressive. What velocity are you getting? Hornady claims 1,325 fps and from what I've read it can do it out of the 7.5" barrel. The 400 will do over 1,000. I have not chronographed mine. Most of my Whitetail handgun kills have been 35 Remington and 41 magnums. I have one kill with a 3,3/4" early birdshead Vaquero 45.

The big bores put them down on the spot if you use a good wide nose to the lungs. I don't usually shoot both shoulders due to the massive meat damage

That battery compartment must take a beating from the cylinder gap.

Good luck. The .480 SRH is an awesome piece of artillery. I originally wanted a target gray but ended up with a SS new model. It has grown on me. Super accurate guns.
