2-2-96 isn't very hard. I think much over 1250fps and that bullet will tear itself on impact and skid on the lands. 2-6-92 would be better, about like coww+2% tin. Powder coat them air cooled or heat at 400° for 20 min and water drop before relubing might work but takes a little more labor

Only speaking for myself, I dont think any hollow point cast bullet is a good idea in the 454. Personally I would suggest staying with a wide flat nose bullet of some type. I think the 454 is a different critter all around and I have had some issues with HP's in 44 Mags, so I would steer well clear of them for the 454 if you plan on running them anywhere near the top of the velocity window.

Those bullets look awesome, and in a hot 45 will work well, I’m sure. I would think at 454 power and speed, if you want to shoot HP’s Swift makes 300’s and 325 grainers that will hold together at any speed in any critter. ( but there expensive) My personal experience with HP cast, at fast speeds, is the front peels away, leaving the base to drive thru like a full wad cutter. You would probably end up with about a 225 grain bullet. To get the impact shock, it would probably work great on lighter thin skinned animals where if the HP pieces fragment off in the first couple inches, there already inside, not just exploding on the outer surface. Just my limited observations.

i.postimg.cc/pXwZdHjs/05-D3-A0-A4-9-C0-D-46-FC-A8-E9-B18-F29-D75-D9-B.png That is what mine came in at as recovered (mp 45-340 Mold). Loss of the gas check it went from about 330 grains with the penta point to what you see above. Past through remnants of a cross tie and into the dirt was cast of coww was average of 1519 FPS. Found a more accurate 🤔 load with a softer alloy at just under 1200 FPS.

Just a quick thought, don’t have to run these bullets at full 454 power levels, down load it to say 1100fps and they would probably perform beautifully and be more pleasant to shoot.

It pretty much comes down to the critter you are hunting, and expected range, as to how solid, or fragmenting a bullet used can, or should be. Even if you use a solid, you making just about a 1/2” hole in and out. With a 75-80% meplat, you will slap the wound channel hard. I do like exit wounds, they make things leak 2X as fast. Your cast HP, Ending up at over 200 grains is still good weight, if it continues thru and penetrates well. On a broadside shot, not an issue, what if it’s a 1/4 towards you, and you hit the point of the shoulder. Will it blow up, and not penetrate? Just things to think about. I personally LOVE the .454. It’s good for 99% of everything on this earth. Can you get flat point bullets from the same manufacturer, with the same weight and length crimp groove, so you can have both with you, shooting the same POI. Open the gate, rotate two, shoot.

It's always a trade off with HP's, drive them too fast & they can fail, find the sweet spot & they can be very, very good. But trying to run them at top speed in the 454 is asking for trouble, there's just too much speed to work with, better to use jacketed I think & not run the risk of losing an animal. There might be one HP out there that breaks the rules but most won't stand up & the one I'm talking about isn't a 45 caliber. In my recent trip to Africa I carried a 282 gr HP in the first chamber & a 308 gr solid in the second chamber of my Ruger bisley 45 Colt. The reason is obvious for most, I could use the HP for broadside shots or index to the solid for more difficult shots or a fast second shot if necessary, at least that was my reasoning for the two different loads. These 2 loads, even though different weights were shooting into 3" at 100 yds rested, a bit unusual but I was very happy & a bit lucky! Again if you're looking for top velocity in the 454 you're probably better off with a solid or a jacketed HP & not run the risk of a blow up. Mike (bearskinner) has taken a lot of big (BIG) game with the 454 & his bullet experience is extensive, re read what he's saying here, it's not type writer knowledge. The big HP I talked about earlier is the 385 gr 475 HP that friend Glenn Swaggart designed several years ago, it has taken just about everything out there & even if the nose shears off there's a good 300 grs of solid lead driving straight ahead, much like a Nosler Partition to finish the job, it's a superb bullet for anything out there. I cast them a bit on the hard side & they are a nasty, nasty bullet.

Good points all. I have decided to go with a Lee 452-300 for a hard cast and stick to jacketed bullets for the HPs

I cast 45-70 hollow points out of 95-5 and they open up violently at 1200fps.

I cast 45-70 hollow points out of 95-5 and they open up violently at 1200fps. The 2-2-96 the op's original post asked about is around 11 brinell. Your 20:1 is adout 10. They will behave pretty closely with the same bullet. The 2-2-96 will reach about 15-16 brinell if water dropped.

If you want something a little more sturdy, check out the GT bullets 385 cast hp. You will have to find it in the .45-70 section, and they can size it to .452. That is all I shoot in my BFR .454 of which I shoot heavy .45 Colt loads. I am pushing that bullet at 1289 FPS.

Sounds like a good bullet.
