Too bad Hunter is gone. He was one of a kind....... From what little I know of the man, yes he was. A little "out there" but I bet way cool to hang out with. Probably couldn't keep a straight face around him. ***** Hunter S. Thompson’s first book, Hells Angels, foments his plunge into self-labeled Gonzo Journalism----spend time with the beast you intend to write about. A generation or two before, Ernest Hemingway pioneered his own Gonzo style. I see Gonzo as a euphemism for Bullets Cuitting Your Hair. Thompson couldn't narrow his style to suit a desk jockey editor. Crazy and violent as the vintage Angels may have been, they didn’t disrupt a city the way the New York mafia did in the 1960’s, actually mush longer. David Bradshaw

David Bradshaw I shall look for the title; I did learn a "little" and I do mean a "little" about the Hell's Angels in LEO training. Mainly a "little" meaning as long as they are not running down little old ladies coming out of church to let them be. We just didn't have the manpower. No way to confront 40 bikers with 4 Deputies on duty at one time. Just couldn't handle it. "Gonzo Journalism" is a term I have taken away from his writings. Apply it to whatever... Imagine an anti-hunter or whatever or whomever imbedding themselves; lets say to the hunting culture for now... how would they see things or convey what we have come to know naturally? How would that one person with a steadfast mindset feel after taking their first whitetail? How would one person educate another and express their viewpoint upon those who see differently? No different with the Hell's Angels, although most of us dont share their culture. Doctor Hunter S. Thompson is kind of a hero of mine. And that was long before "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" ever came out. Plus my Dad was a bit of a pothead in his time, so there is that.

The Angels I know and ride with today are a far cry from the wild days Mr Thompson wrote about. Two real estate agents, a nurse, a dentist, and a general contractor.

When I load the Sierra in my 454’s I run them at 1400 fps. I was told (by a credible source) that was the optimum velocity for that bullet. I run the FA 300 to the same. Dan DAN: MY NEXT RELOADING PROJECT IS SOME PULLED 300gr SWIFT A-FRAMES IN CASULL CASES OVER 25.5grs OF 2400 (BEARSKINNER's LOAD). IN MY FA 8 3/8ths" STALKERS I SHOULD BE IN THE 1,400's, BUT IN MY 10 INCH AND 12 INCH FA REVOLVERS I MAY BE IN THE 1,500's. IF I CAN GET THIS GOING SOON I HOPE TO USE THEM THIS DEER SEASON. WILL ALSO LOAD SOME 300gr XTP MAGS WITH THE SAME POWDER CHARGE FOR PRACTICE ROUNDS. I LOADED UP SOME OF THE 300gr PULLED SWIFT A FRAMES IN STAR LINE CASES, 25.5grs OF 2400 AND REM 7 1/2 PRIMERS. CASES HAD TO BE INSIDE CHAMFERED WITH A LONG CHAMFERING TOOL TO GET BULLETS TO FULLY SEAT. SHOT THE LOADS IN A 12 INCH AND A 10 INCH FA 454, LOADS WERE TOO HOT AND I WOULD GET SOME PRIMER FLOW THAT WOULD MAKE CYLINDER ROTATION VERY DIFFICULT. THOUGHT IT MAY BE A LOOSE FIRING PIN BUSHING BUT THEY WERE BOTH TIGHT, SO IT WAS THE LOAD. I MAYBE COULD TINKER WITH THE SEATING DEPTH A TAD, REDUCE THE POWDER CHARGE A BIT, etc. BUT DEER SEASON IS IMMINENT AND I HAVE RUN OUT OF TIME FOR NEW HANDLOADING PROJECTS. I HAVE HAD TROUBLE BEFORE SEATING BULLETS IN THIS BATCH OF STAR LINE 454 BRASS, SEEMS LIKE THE CASE WALLS ARE OVERLY THICK, AND YOU HAVE REDUCED CASE CAPACITY. SEATING BULLETS IN NEW BRASS WITHOUT FIRST DOING A LONG CHAMFERING INSIDE THE CASE JOB RESULTS IN DAMN NEAR 100% FAILURE TO BE ABLE TO FULLY SEAT A BULLET.

Measure the bullets. Are they .451 or .452? My weapon will not chamber a loaded .452 bullet.

Also, where do you get the long reaming tool?

Mr. Bradshaw, I HAVE to get you on the phone some day. I probably wont even have a competent list of questions to ask, but just start talking, I want to listen and interject my questions from there. new podcast idea!

Rey,
The only time I have ever had sticky extraction in a FA 454 was with some loads using 2400 powder. Don’t remember the load right off hand but its in my notes with a “do not use” flag. Not a condemnation of 2400 in 454 at all, it’s just that it spikes quickly when it gets to top pressures.
I have not had the issues you mentioned with Starline cases. I might be tempted to make a call to Sedalia. At any rate it’s a good lesson, especially when loading cartridges with pressures as high as 454C. Changing anything, even the lot # on components, can affect working pressures.

Rey, I have loaded without a problem 3-4 hundred of the Swift 300 gr Aframes in new Starline 454 brass using a light chamfer inside the case mouth. Your problem sounds like you do have a batch of brass thicker than normal, or a case expander that is too small. I know what you're talking about not having time for a lot of reloading troubleshooting right before deer season, but a simple test would be to try to load some Swifts in once fired brass instead of new brass. Mine load easier in once fired than virgin brass. Good luck.
PS, your 25.5 gr 2400 load is not near Swift's published max load with that bullet, so if you're getting pressure problems, that may indicate a thick brass issue.

I HAVE HAD THE SAME ISSUE WITH THIS BRASS USING SWIFT 265gr A FRAMES, THE PULLED 300gr SWIFT A FRAMES AND WITH HORNADY 300r XTP MAG BULLETS, DON'T THINK IT IS A BULLET ISSUE.

Also, where do you get the long reaming tool? RCBS VLD CHAMFER TOOL. I CHAMFER WITH A REGULAR CHAMFER TOOL THE USE THE VLD, THAT IS THE ONLY WAY I CAN GET BULLETS TO FULLY SEAT IN THIS BATCH OF STARLINE 454 CASES.
