Here's a quick recap for those that missed the original post- I inherited a 'Frankengun' from a dear friend. 25-30 years ago it was his idea of the ultimate fighting 1911a1. I kept it the way he had it set up, Baby-Shit-Green Teflon coating and all, for a number of years out of respect, but in that form it was far from my favorite gun. Eventually I wanted to modify it, but it didn't feel right. Then Linda said, 'Are you kidding? Lee would have been fascinated to see what you would do with it!' When she's right, she's right. My concept was for a gun that could do double-duty as a carry gun and a match gun for action shooting. I stripped the slide, flat-topped it and installed an Xpress night-sight. Hand-cut 20 LPI checkering on the front of the grip and a checkered flat mainspring housing. Made a set of Quilted Maple grips. Put old-school leather bumper pads on the Colt magazines. Installed a modified low-profile ambidextrous safety. Lastly I fitted a 5" Bar-Sto bull-barrel and heavy guide-rod. I cut the stirrup for a custom reverse-recoil plug and fabricated the plug. Put in a heavier mainspring because I had started getting light strikes. The gun is tight as a locked vault, and will cycle empty cases from the magazine. No failures to feed or eject in the first hundred rounds. Break-in period? Not needed, because I actually finished the gun. I need to hit the reloading bench so I can really wring this gun out, but so far I'm loving it. The target shows a few mag-dumps at 7 yards while testing.

Is that a Commander-length frame with a 5" barrel and slide? I like it, whatever it is!

"Baby-Shit-Green Teflon coating" That must've been applied back in the 70's... In my youth we called it avocado and it was everywhere . Carpet , towels , sweaters, appliances but mostly carpet ,,,,,, yeah , lot's of deep shag carpet. No guns I remember but we did not have Cerakote then or we probably would have had lots.

I have seen that color on firearms lots of times. Makes me think of the Viet Nam era (before my time) so I dont really know. Excellent job Tinker!

Oh, I remember it. My Mom had our house enveloped in that color during that decade. That was the whole basis of my joke, which fell horribly flat, as they so often do...
