I lucked into a good deal on a Mountain Lite 396. I'll probably try to find some grips that enclose the back strap, and haven't decided on a sight upgrade vs RMR. The front and rear sights are both taller than necessary, and the V notch rear and round top fiber optic front don't fit with my preferred sight picture. I plan to practice with light loads using HS6 and cast bullets, but for carry I can't beat the CCI aluminum case 200 grain Gold Dot load for a good combination of light weight and low recoil with an excellent bullet. I have no plans to abuse the thin forcing cone. It remains to be seen what role this gun will play with a Model 69 in the safe as well. Holding each in hand the difference in weight is dramatic. The ball detent lockup on the crane and the beefy forcing cone make it clear the 69 is the superior workhorse.

I had one that I loved, but sold it off when I had my big sell off last year... I had a pair of laminated grips on mine, but they didn't cover the back strap

I could be wrong but the only grips I can think of that cover the back strap well are the Xframe grips that would look like someone mounted a monster truck tire on a Subaru.

Here's mine with a set of full size Hogue 500 X Frame Tamers: (unloaded, the gun weighs 19.3 oz with the full size Hogues. . . The same Hogue 500 X Frame Tamers modified to round the butt and remove the finger groves shown on a 2.75" M69 . . If you take your time (which I didn't), the modification can be done much cleaner. . If you start shooting 250s approaching 1,000 fps, you will appreciate the Hogues. . Paul

Those 396 Ti Mountain Lite's are sure nice. Pearce's Handloader Pet Loads article has load data worked up for one, he doesn't take it over SAAMI max. Handloader Link

Nice looking gun . Had a mountain lite 396 for a while , and for me it was too much of a good thing....as far as the weight . Even 250's around 900 or so gave me a pretty good pounding . Have recently bought a model 69 2 3/4" to try around the ranch , that bit of extra weight is nice , just enough that it can be loaded plenty heavy .

Please please watch every one of those aluminum cased rounds for pull out. I blew up a Belgian Browning Hi-Power in my teens because one round felt funny when the slide went forward; so I racked the weapon chambering a fresh round and the weapon detonated in my hands. I was lucky only the weapon was lost. The first round jumped the bullet out of the case when it chambered and stuck in the barrel. Chambering a second round just pushed the bullet into the throat and the resulting kaboom happened. Please dont think of me as being "high and mighty", I am using up some 357 Blazer rounds myself but I am watching every one. I would hate for your weapon to get tied up when needed the most or someone get hurt. I only post this with all respect to you and those you love.
