My cool old 30/30 1899 Vintage 94 SRC is just not going to be of much use to me. It is a shame cause it is cool. But after spending 100.00 on a taller original type front sight it is still hitting 5 inches high at 50 yards. I am thinking it OS time to leave it in the safe until I can get some 170 grain mo for it or turn it into something else. One of the Ruger Built Marlins should be available soon...tj

Have you considered removing the rear sight and installing a tang sight? Your older carbine should already be tapped for one. A Lyman tang sight works great on my old Winchesters.

Are you looking for 170's? If so I'll take a look at what David Clements sold me when I cleaned him out.

Don't really want to put a tang sight on it. I would prefer to just get a different rifle. As for 170s if you have some, send me a PM we could talk...tj

Are you trying gas checked cast or jacketed bullets? I apologize if this has been discussed in another thread, I didn't read it. I would hesitate giving up on a 1899 30-30 till all avenues are exhausted. If all you are looking for is deer-good-enough, then there are many ways to go about it. Even knowing the rifle shoots high at 50 yards is easily compensated for at that range. I would like to know way more information. Please keep us informed. If you are dead set in your tracks, please let me know what you would like to sell your rifle for by PM.

101 ! I am Shooting 150 grain federal, factory loads. I have tried various handloads with Jacketed 150 grain Bullets , and until I got the replacement front sight I was 8 inches hi at 50 yards. I am aware that 170s should shoot higher as the lower velocity would have the muzzle climb more before the bullet exits the muzzle. But I used to shoot this rifle well at 100 yards with 170 grain bullets. If I remember correctly , about 2 inches high at 100. I will not Put a peep sight on the rifle. I would consider it, and the guy I bought my taller front sight from, had a bunch of old ones for 250.00 and 300.00, I would not put a new anything visible on a 120 year old rifle. I simply can't find 170s and am tired of screwing around with it. ..tj

Can the rear sight be filed down ,,,, just a lick or two ? Shouldn't take much. Maybe try a gas checked cast bullet ? With less friction they can move a little faster with the same powder charge and pressure. Should shoot lower , maybe.

Needsmo, I don't want To file the sight, The cast bullet Idea has merit ! Factory Ammo for the 30WCF in it's early days used cast 160s I think. But i would prefer to shoot factory ammo from this gun. I think I will just trade it for something else. Another issue is that i can just barely see the front sight. I would not be able shoot game with it in lo light anyway.

Can you lay a straightedge on your sights? Does the straightedge point downward? Is the bore at the muzzle concentric to the outside of the barrel? Take off the handguard and magazine tube and shoot a three shot group.
