My Grail Gun is almost complete. The frame is being sent to Turnbull for case hardening and the frame to Scott Kolar for some mammoth ivory. It will primarily be a whitetail gun and companion in the woods. I need some ideas on ammo. I handload .44 Special, 45-70, .375 and 6.5 JDJ and am about to start .357 Mag, so I am not quite a rookie at reloading. I like the idea of a 250-300 grain LSWCFP at about 1100fps, or a JHP at about the same speed. Will this for too much for a North Georgia whitetail gun, given proper shot placement and responsible range? It will side me when I go on my grizzly hunt later next year, but I understand that the ammo requirement might be a tad bit different .

For most of my carry ammo I use 260-265gr JHP,AF,or WFN. If I’m carrying it in bear country I load up 340grLFN’s. The 260-265’s are a great all around all use weight IMO.

You’ll love it!
I’m assuming you went with a 5 shot?

Yes, it is a 5-shot. It is my 1st .45 Colt (well, besides an unfired FA Model 97 and Colt Army Model) and I am not too conversant on the power level for normal use.

You're gonna love it. My first cuatom was a 45 colt Nimrod and its my go to gun. I've shot a few different bullet and powder configurations but I always come back to a 320 LFN cast from a LBT mold. This bullet cast of straight wheel weights, powder coated and ignited by a CCI 350 sitting over 23 grains of 4227 goes right at 1200 fps. Easy to shoot and hits wherever I aim as long as I do my job. It's accounted for 2 deer and numerous hogs. Never recovered a bullet.
One bullet I've been wanting to try but can't get a mold for at the moment is the MP 45 ruger only hollow point. A 45 cal hollow point weighing 300 grains sounds just about perfect to me for whitetail.

Do yourself a favor and subscribe to Load Data.
It has all the Handloader Magazine load data including mild to wild loads for the .45 Colt including heavy loads specifically for a 5 shot custom.
Also search for John Linebaugh,s article “dissolving the myth”. It has everything you really need to know.
That is also on his website under “writings”

Or take the really logical path and simply buy a few up to date reloading manuals.

I hunt in southern Middle Tennessee and currently my favorite 45 colt load is out of a custom Gallagher bisley pushing the 350 Beartooth LCMN bullet just antick under 1300 fps. It is a bit snappy but not unbearable. My Dad put meat on the table for years with a 45 colt using the Hornady 300 xtp around 12-1300 fps. Our deer are not too different. The load range you are looking at will be just fine.

My first Nimrod was a stainless 45 Colt by Bowen and I foolishly let it get away. Luckily a number of years later Ben Forkin called me and we worked out a deal for a blued version of the same gun that Bushog sent me some Dall grips to fit to it. Probably my most adaptable revolver in the safe. The fact that Ben used to work at BCA and in fact did a lot of the work on some of the Best Grade guns makes me think I'm not missing a lick by going with Ben's version. Funny thing is, I don't even have a picture of this gun in my files! Didn't realize that until now!

The Nimrod is simply a marvelous revolver, they are a bit heavy but they are also steady to hold because of this and when you are running the 5 shot firewalled heavy loads all of that weight is really helpful at taming the recoil. Standard 45 colt 250gr loads at 850fps is like shooting a 32 mag! The same bullet at 1100fps will do everything you need the gun to do in the south and be easier to shoot than most 357 mags are!
The key to that gun is a good holster and a good stout gun belt to hold it to your pants! Treat it with just a little care and it will last the rest of your life...
