Any 38 Super fans out there? The super has always intrigued me. Cool round. I’ve wanted one forever but have never come across one that is what I’m looking for. I want To get a full size 1911 stainless. Back when I shot IPSC there was a time used single stacks were all over and I never bought one.

Love the 38 Super. Have a Custom Single Six and EAA Witness Match Elite chambered in it. It's a performer for sure...

I don't have a 38 Super, but I do have a Star Modelo Super in 9mm Largo that I modified to shoot 38 Super. The Star Super is a well made solid pistol. Largo and Super ammo both have the same case length and bullet diameter. The only real difference is the 38 Super has a tiny step of a semi rim. Surplus 9mm Largo ammo, available at the time I bought mine, comes within 50fps of factory 38 Super. To modify my pistol I removed the barrel and cut two small steps in the hood to accommodate the super's semi rim. The magazines needed the feed lips to be opened up slightly. Now the pistol will feed, chamber, fire and extract 9mm Largo, 38 Super, 9mm Luger and 380 acp. It will feed and fire a mixed magazine, the only exception is the 380 doesn't have enough power to cycle the slide. I found where I put my pictures The mottled pattern next to the front of the slide is what wouldn't come off with steel wool after my shop fire a few years back.

I have an old Colt Lightweight Commander in .38 Super fitted with a BarSto barrel. Irv fit the barrel for me himself when I was a broke college kid and saved me from trying to make a race gun out of it.
Funny thing is, I shoot a 9mm CZ75 in Steel Challenge matches and, when the Pandemic hit and ammo dried up, one local shop had a shelf of .38 Super and almost nothing else. Natuarally, I picked some up!
A full size .38 Super would be "pleasant" gun to shoot.

I have two, a Commander that is a favored carry gun and a hi cap STI that was built for shooting steel games back in the day, American Handgunner World Shootoffs, Steel Challenge, Team Challenge, etc. it is my favorite competition gun and has great memories attached to it........Including winning a man on man best of three shoot off against Rob Leatham.

Most of the real gamers in IPSC ran 38 Super race guns in the late 80's, early 90's. In all the matches in which I competed, I only ever saw one gun go ka-boom. Luckily, the shooter didn't have wooden grips on his gun or he would have been picking splinters out of his hand for a week. I think an old case somehow slipped into his match ammo loads, and let go.
If you run the Super at sane pressures, it is still a formidable round. IMO, if you plan on running 50k psi, it's best to use only new brass... NOT range scrap.

.....Including winning a man on man best of three shoot off against Rob Leatham. Trapr I can't let it pass without mention that someone on our forum beat Rob Leatham in a man on man shoot off. Wow Trapr, that is some serious bragging rights, and yeah, that .38 Super would be a special gun to me too. Impressive to say the least.

And of course ramped barrels which weren't in fashion when making major with the .38 Super was first fashionable. Like I said, I dreamed of shooting Major loads in my .38 Super, stories of Brian Enos, et al, running through my head. But, thankfully, Irv Sto pointed out to me the errors in my thinking: 1) the aluminum frame was not suited to the recoil. 2) The ramped barrels were necessary to prevent cases from letting go. I'm eternally grateful to Irv for pointing out the errors in my thinking. This was my gradfathers gun, willed to me, and I was only 23 at the time. As-is, with factory equivilent loads and a ten round magazine, the .38 Super is still formidible, escpeically in the 28 oz Lightweight Commander model!

Old bullseye shooters make paper punchers out of them... They shoot good!

Get out of that Super groove... I think I make around 700 FPS with a 147 grain hard cast bullet. Guns are bullseye 50 yard X ring accurate and recoil like a 22.
