JeffH and I were having a chat about “the workin’ man’s .44” - that no-nonsense, minimum-frills-but-still-elegant tool that seems to get the nod more often than not. Maybe it’s a .44spl, maybe a .44mag, maybe not a .44 at all. This came about when we were discussing recent projects and I was super pleased with what I was referring to as “my working man’s .44” - a Ruger Flattop .44spl with some minor work done (expect the grips by Zane - those are fantastic). BBQ on a budget, if you will. He sent me some pics of his similar gun and I thought I’d share them both below. Feel free to throw your pistol on the pile of “workin’ man’s .44s”.

I recently traded into a 3.5" .44 Special GP-100. We shot it for the first time tonight. What a great gun. Best trigger I've ever seen on a Ruger double-action. If it doesn't qualify for a working man's .44 Special, I don't know what does.
Nice gun, OP!

If I cant pry that 44 special Smith out of another guy here's hands that GP100 would certainly fill the bill!! (And I know I cant pry it out of his hands, aint gonna try.) I would say for me, the best one I own but rarely carry is a Smith 58 41 Magnum. Controllable, comfortable, elegant, deadly. (4 inch by the way). Cant believe some people are asking north of 2K for these guns.

Goes to show you it's one of the great ones and there are a few too many fellas know that.

Also a Flattop Blackhawk 44 Special. I actually keep a pair and a spare: this 4-5/8, a 5-1/2 blue Flattop and a SS 3-3/4 Vaquero Sheriff's model. All 44 special. But this one is the one that I shoot most.

Still can't seem to post pics. But anyway my working gun this past couple months is a stainless service six 4" 357mag police trade-in from Australia I bought off Buds for $400. It shows it was carried alot but shot little. It was missing the grips, but I found a returned new set of goncalo alves Hogue monogrip on Amazon for $34. Stoked with MP's 358429 penta hp on 15gr h110 and carried in a galco pancake. If that ain't a working class gun I don't know what is.

Nice guns. Being a workin man myself I consider any gun I use a lot as my working gun. I prefer customized examples that I have personal stories to go along with. Working with gunsmiths has enriched my experience and adds much personal value to things I put my dollars into. These are 45 colts, my favorite cartridge. 2 Clements and a Ryan Ross. As for leather I love floral carving. Hopefully after many years these will have good wear and can tell stories about them.

Love my 44! It loves the 10.5 grain Unique load as well as 23 grains of 4227 under 240 grain projectiles. This pic is from several years ago when I was shooting green dot through it a lot.

We need to talk, sir!
I got the same gun from Bud's and I am tickled senseless having one again after a 30 year gap. When tdbarton and I were talking, my Service Six was on the top of my thoughts as far as this application goes too. I made a lot of tweaks to mine which might lead one to believe it was in rough shape, but to the contrary, internally it was darned near factory-new - which explains the requirement of tweaks. One notable quirk was that there was a raised annular burr in each chamber at the back edge of the throat, which would not allow me to fully chamber .3585" cast bullets, although they would slip into the throats from the fronts! How the heck did someone shoot that thing over the course of 40+ years??
All tuned up now and it's a GEM!
