I wish we could have used a quad to pack this one out. Not sure how we'd get it in there other than in the winter when its frozen then leave it all year. I have a rokon I think we could get in there by crossing the river in a raft. Maybe next summer we'll go in a cut a little bit better trail so that would be a possibility. The thought of packing out a big bull from back there isn't a very pleasant thought!

A wise man said to me you will only shoot one moose that isn't within sight of the river, one time will brand that lesson into your mind in the Alaskan backcountry. I haven't had the chance to hunt Alaska yet but I have certainly stood over a few elk thinking "Fowler what did you just do?"

The one I shot walked out into the river before it bedded on the other side. Wading when it's 5° sucks

I haven't had the chance to hunt Alaska yet but I have certainly stood over a few elk thinking "Fowler what did you just do?" ***** Bill.... a Quebec hunter well north of the Saguenay River dropped a moose in the edgewater of one of the countless lakes. A moose walks through muck where a man can push a canoe paddle out of sight. The moose floated, which inspired the hunter to tie it to his rowboat, tow it across the lake. Presently, the moose began to sink, pulling the transom down. Unable to untie the rope, the hunter cut the rope, saving his life but costing him the moose. Folk who’ve shouldered moose, piece by piece, prefer to call ‘em. Moose have extraordinary hearing; a moose may come to exactly where you are from outlandish distance. Where the moose have been hunted, a moose may approach close but remain out of sight, wait for you to identify yourself. This moose is likely to be heard, then continue unseen. This moose is a most elusive adversary, and will climb as steep a sidehill as an elk. I once heard an avid hunter boast, “Put me on a moose track, and I’ll have it in 15 minutes.” An egotist with a bit of a Napoleon complex, he nevertheless made me wonder whether the moose he’d hunted were on Thorazine. Just as Snyd knows on sheep, when you hunt on your hind legs, be ready go deep, be ready to lug meat. David Bradshaw

Not having killed a moose , but having been a backpacker and climber, I'd be tempted to make a fire and just eat it right there ! Well, a thought. LOL.

I think it was 3 parts lino to 10 parts soft lead with a bit of tin. I don't have an COWW so I had to make due with what I could find. These are the first bullets I've cast since I was a kid helping my dad.
To be fair we could see the river! We were up on a hill overlooking a big long bench above the river. Getting some elevation really helps with seeing into all the little meadows between all the birch and spruce trees. I've packed a fair bit of meat on my back. This wasn't the worst nor the easiest.

The rule of thumb on packing moose is, “one moose, one man, one mile, one day.”
