All,
Can anyone please help me with recipes for reloading 40-65 in a Winchester 1886, using Acme bullet 250 grain powder coated bullets? I saw load data in my Lyman manual but it states for modern guns not antique levers.
Thank you. . I’d like to use smokeless powder, and I have a very good selection of powers on hand to choose from.

I cannot provide any specific load data for the 86 as my 40/65 is a Remington Hepburn target rifle. I can suggest looking for a Mike Venturino article where he worked up loads for for one. I don't remember what year/month unfortunately.
Loading a 40/65 for a lever action and a single shot might as well be a completely different cartridge. I only shoot heavy cast bullets and case fulls of BP.

I would HIGHLY recommend investing a mere $30 in his book Shooting Lever Guns of the Old West... It'd be money very well spent!

I would assume the loads I shoot in my Navy Arms Rolling block would be safe in your rifle... they shoot good enough in my rifle to be a contender in long range steel buffalo shoots, when I've played
I'll take a picture of my load recipe if you would like...

The Lyman cast bullet handbook would be my first stop, I'm at work or I could grab my copy off the shelf but it is a god send for cast bullet reloading.

Thank you for the replies. I ordered the Venturino book, should have it by the end of the week.

These are my 2 loads for my Navy Arms Rolling Block... This box has both 240 - 242 grain Flat Points, & 268 - 270 grain Flat Points, & shoot quite well out to 500 yards with my Rolling Block, & a tang sight... ( the dot and the X on the box designate marks I put on the bullets nose, so I can tell which is which in the box ) rifle is 2nd to the bottom in this picture...
