If I were to carry any of my percussion six shooters for defense it would definitely be my stainless Ruger Old Army. Maybe my Pietta 1858 Remington clone, a distant second. Both are very accurate with the Ruger being heads above the Remington in reliable cycling. Well, the Remington is lighter and a little easier to handle . . . and can be made to to run every bit as reliable as the ROA. A coil action makes it quite the 19th century version of the Ruger!!

This is from Paco's article "Special Handguns."
It was in Virginia in 1970 that I became the owner of my first look-a-like Colt SA. It was chambered for the 45 Colt round. We lived at the time in the back country, in the wilds and wooded paradise of the state. On the way home from the gun store with my prize, I spied a vulture on a tree branch looking down into some heavy brush. I had no idea where the gun sights were set, but figured with the few rounds of factory ammo the store clerk gave me with my purchase (price by the way was $87.50), I hoped the gun was set for standard ammo.
I lined up on the big ugly bird and fired. He spread his wings and hopped down into the brush. Then suddenly he was back on the branch. I held a little steadier and fired again. Again he jumped into the brush below him but didn’t come back up. Imagine my surprise when I went over there and found not one...but two dead vultures. The first falling into the brush pushed the second up to the same branch and into the same dose the first got. They had been eating a rabbit.
For years my main load in the Colt look-a-likes for the 45, was 18+ grains of Herc 2400 under the Keith 260 grain cast bullet. I took wild boar, feral pigs, black bear, deer, feral dogs, and much, much more, with that load. I ran into the darndest situation in Richmond Virginia while packing that first 45 Colt clone in the early 1970s. Three idiots decided to hold up the bank I was in one day. Three shots from my 45 single action later, hold up was over, surrender was at the top of their list...and I had killed their car. Thinking back I never felt under gunned...and I never worried about reloading speed and all that stuff you read about. I knew the power of that load, and my ability and accuracy.

I have a buddy that was a SASS champion many years ago that carried a pair of fully engraved Colt SAAs, one nickel, one gold plated, in IWB holsters. He could operate a SA, DA, or auto like no other I've known! I don't have that skill with a SA revolver, so I mainly carry mine around the ranch or while hunting. My buddy at O'Rourke Leather knows I love Askins Avenger style holsters and made this prototype up with scrap leather a number of years ago for me. If I ever get skilled enough with a SA revolver, I wouldn't hesitate to carry this setup further than the property line.

A reinforced opening for the revo would make that a really nice holster. I too like the Askins avenger/Bruce Nelson style, be it revo or auto.

orourkeleather.com/ is his site, but give him a call since he doesn't have his single action holsters on it. He used to have the molds for making them, but is paring down as the leather holster market hasn't been good and he's shifting to other leatherworking ventures. Worst he can tell you is "no." You will need to leave a voicemail and he'll call you back; the telemarketers drive him nuts, so he doesn't answer unknown calls!

Barranti makes his Bruce Nelson holster that is very similar that I had made for my 4 5/8" S7 Stainless Bisley that I really like. With the rear loop it holds tight to your side without digging into my kidney area and the weight is spread out enough that I don't really feel the gun on my hip at all. I did have him add a hammer thong for me, I wear the gun in the back country fly fishing and horseback riding and will use the thong where a little more retention is preferred. It is the first of this sort of a holster I have tried but it wont be the last one I own...

I carry every day. What I carry, depends on the day, and what I am doing that day. I own 1100 acre horse ranch. If I'm on the horseback (riding fences), I used to have S&W 66-2 in .357 on my hip, and a Winchester 94 in 30-30 in the scabbard. Last year I purchased Weihrauch Bounty Hunter in .44 Mag, and it quickly became my riding companion (Winchester will never go away). If I'm on the quad, I have G17 in the shoulder holster, and Arsenal 106 SBR in the gun rack. If I'm traveling to a neighboring state (state line is two hours away, and the town for shopping is another hour), I have an AR SBR, and G17 in the glove box (between the seats). I also have a camera case behind the passenger's seat with six AR mags. G17 carries 21 (with one up the pipe), and I carry one spare. I think that will take me back home regardless of what might happen on the trip. Going to town (SMALL town 20 miles away) shopping for food, I carry (not always, sometimes it's 1911, or even YU Tok in the small of my back.......I am proficient with all of them) the same Weihrauch openly. I never fired any of my weapons on an animal for "sport", or food. Spent 24 years in the military, and seen plenty of action. I hope I'll never have to do it again, but if I have to........

I think what we carry is based a lot on where we live & how we travel. Those who live in the big city are going to carry semi auto's & carry one two reloads because there's a high probability they might need more fire power than someone like me who lives in a small town, knows just about everyone & there's seldom anything more than the occasional bar fight. But for anyone to not carry I think is a little bit foolish anymore just because of the way things have changed in the last 10-20 years. There seems to be a lot less respect, people are more stressed & you can't pick up a paper, even in a small town without seeing front page news of a shooting somewhere in your local area, that didn't use to happen, now it's the new normal. I always wear something, usually a Walther 9mm compact with a spare mag, I put it on in the morning & take it off at night. I walk out side in the dark & do a mag change once a week or so. If I switch guns I practice doing reloads outside in the dark, many times with a Browning Hi Power or one of my double action revolvers. They have moon clips. Most people think gun fights are during broad daylight & it happens right out in the open, better re think that. Bad guys are usually predators & like to have the advantage. The two guys that murdered my brother several years ago weren't tough, just mean.

I carry daily and have for many years. Over the years my carry guns have changed several times. When I was working going armed was frowned upon, we weren’t allowed to even have a gun in the truck, so I carried a Ruger 9mm in my pocket. Before that it was a Ruger .380, but that seemed a little small, and being a single stack, not enough cartridges. My daily carry gun now alternates between a Smith & Wesson Shield Plus with an extra mag, or a Taurus GX4, also with an extra mag. I carry the S&W the most. I also carry either a 12 gauge slug gun, or an AR 15 in 7.62X39 under my back seat. I live in the country, and there are several fair to middling towns nearby, but trouble can come from anywhere in the times we live, and unfortunately it’s getting worse. For most of my travel, I wouldn’t feel too under gunned with a SA, but it might be hard to conceal under a T shirt.

Fishing I currently carry a steel 4 1/2" .38 super AIWB (also one of my EDC) or my 3 3/4" Ruger SBH in .44 cross draw. My semi EDC's and fishing handguns I rotate from .38 super to .40.
Drycreek, "we weren’t allowed to even have a gun in the truck"
IBM and other companies down here tried to prohibit personal firearms on their property but the state stepped in and passed legislation stopping private companies from prohibiting legally stowed arms in the employees vehicles.

Our location and our mission certainly does dictate what our life saving tools of choice are.
I had to work several shooting scenes over the years as a police officer. One thing that's interesting was a scene where brass was ejected everywhere with vehicles and buildings being struck, almost always it seems nobody was hit...... Most death scenes or where serious injuries occurred from firearms it was typically one or two shots fired only. I was told years ago it's usually one or two shots at close range. Through my own experience I found it to be true in the area where I worked.... It's definitely unknown what one will need in a time of self defense, we just try to be prepared.... I also agree one should carry in today's society.
I carry my short barrel SA in the appendix area IWB, that works well for me concealing, maybe it's not good for everyone but I find it's easy access from concealment... Today I often have issues with my hands and manipulate a SA pretty well..... It's a point shooter for me.
