I knew my old Model 30/30 has a preference for 170. grain loads,
But all me ammo and bullets are 150s. When I had it out last weekend I did not hit much.
I took it yesterday to find out why, I put a target on a box and walked about 40 yards away, rested on a sleeping bag, and fired 3 shots, walking closer to the target, looking for holes in the paper, and shocked that none were there. when I got right up to the target I found one hole on the top edge, about 10.5 inches from my POI.
So I walked back the my jeep, and fired 3 more at the bottom of the paper, 3 holes about 1.7 inch group just fine for windage, But about 10.5 inches high.
This old Winnie is 122 years old , but works great, It has a pin in front sight, that kind of pivots on a single pin, I am not scientific enough to know how much taller a sight I need but I need a taller one.
Numrich was no help, nor Brownells, I know of a guy about 80 mile from my home who has a bunch of old Winchester sights, But I have not been to his shop in a long long time, would not be a surprised if the man has gone to the happy hunting ground.
I would like to carry this old girl, next month, My friends will be bow hunting for Elk and I can tag along with my bear tag, and a bearcat for grouse and Rabbit's!
Anybody know where I might look ?
I am sure a guy like John Powers , Could make a great replacement , and probably would be an inexpensive job, but would take time for sure.
Some place around here i have a copy of a Winchester sight book, But it is not likely that even with a part number, somebody will have something i can order online some place. But you never know, Marbel's or lyman just might have exactly what i need.
But i think best bet is some guy with a parts bin in his garage...tj
