For years I've wanted a New Service, 1917 or if I was really lucky, a nice Shooting Master. Missed out on some deals, one in particular I remember was a 1917 cut to 4" with Micro sights added and some really nice stags for $250. Still kick myself for that one. I also remember an engraved .44Spl at Dixie Gun Works several years back. I encountered this 7½" .38-40 on Gunbroker a while back and decided it was time. It has what is left of the original finish with a good bore. Certainly doesn't hurt that it has old ivory on it. It chambers one of my favorite cartridges and I really need to get out and see what it'll do.

What a magnificent old gun. The 38-40 is easily on my top five favorite revolver cartridges. Truth is, the cartridge is fairly close to the top of the list.
I'd sure like to see a range report on that one...

I have acquired three New Services and have really come to appreciate them. I love the Ivory on yours and with that style of rampant Colt it should be in the 1909-1910 range with the improved lock work. Here are some pics of two of mine. The target one is a 1915 in 455 Eley with Medford rifling that was shipped to Canada and the other one is a 1920 in 45 Colt.

Oh man! Color me green with envy!
I bought one cheap in 32-20 with some of the nickel plating coming off. Didn't bother me in the least because the gun shop did not realize the grips were real ivory. I took it to the ranch to show my Father and havent seen it since. That big ole fat man can MOVE when properly motivated. I dont care, I will see it again someday and it makes him happy so its all good.

Thanks! 4" is a really cool length for the big Colt DA's. The one I missed all those years ago had been cut to 4" and fitted with Micro sights. What a neat sixgun! I just missed an auction on one with King's sights because I forgot to bid on it.

A semi Retired gunsmith friend of mine has a 38/40 New Service. It is in pretty darned good shape I think it is about 5 inch. It has an awful set of fake stag grips. I might have bought it already but 1295.00 is just to much. I think 1100 would be as much as I would pay...tj

I paid $1050 for this one but the ivory played a significant role in that.
