We had a pretty close to normal spring, for rain. But over the last few weeks you'd think it was spring again ! Hence the new rain hat. The unfortunate by product is skeeters ! LOTS of skeeters. I know may areas east of Mississippi River may be the same. I have never seen them so bad here. With products that worked, but harsh, cause pollution , gone off the market, etc.. I've seen horrible amounts of skeeters in the Wind River Range and the salt marshes of Assateague. But here..never this bad. Seems I've brought this up before, a trend, things getting worse ? Waste of time fussing over covid when we should be concerned by skeeters, historically the biggest killer of man ?

I haven't been buzzed or bitten by a mosquito all year. Maybe the covid killed them all.

Wal Mart sells a canned aresol yard fogger that works pretty well. I cant remember the name but we use it a lot. Something like "Camp Fogger" or something. Made by the same company that makes "OFF".
Our place at Seadrift, Tx. has had 15 inches of rain this week. I expect them to be EPIC in about a week.

Yes, yikes ! I took and left a big can of Yard Guard at camp a couple weekends ago. Fog the area, heavy on the upwind side...and relax. Often have old work shirt that I lay on the ground, hose and wear. Anything to avoid spraying the chems on me. Hat brim, etc get a spray.

I prefer to old fashion method of dealing with skeeters. Smoke a cigar.

I shouldn't say this, but even with all the rain on this side of the state, I don't think I've seen or heard one yet. Earwig and grass hoppers aplenty though! Been picking ticks off me and the pets since April.
Poison Ivy is proliferating so fast it's creepy. No pun intended with "creepy."

They're just a part of life here in AK. At least anywhere I've lived in AK. If they get bad I'll wear a head net or use spray.

Aaron I have never been to AK before but for a person living where they run herds of Caribou to death and you say you might wear a head net or use a little spray; I will just tip my hat and stand aside while you come through. I cant stand the little devils. Makes me claw my skin somethin fierce once bit; so does it to my son. One mosquito is too much for me. You ought to see the scars on my skin from chiggers and skeeters (among other wounds) I wear. Folks would swear I just like to bleed. Im afraid my son shares my affliction. I wish I had a way of saving him from what I went through when I was younger. Made me tough though.

I was fishing on the Deshka river in Alaska, fighting with a 25# Chinook salmon, and this &^*&^*%& mosquito somehow got under the netting that was over my hat, and then got between my right eye and the lens in my glasses... bouncing back and forth like a darn pinball machine.
Out loud: you have got to be kidding me!

Of the newer, non-DEET repellants, what do you like best ? I have an array of things here. Can't say any are great. We have one of those Therma-Cell units that's the size of a large universal remote control. We used it last time we went to Westline Inn. In a valley with a trout stream, many beaver ponds. We could sit outside if we put it under the chair of whoever was sitting upwind. Other small winged pests, black flies or no-see-ums were less impressed and my lower legs took a hit still. Here in my yard the skeeters are mobbing my Labs eyes. She has a flea/tick/skeeter collar. I've taken to wiping the top of her head with Skin-so-Soft. Minimal help.

The therma-cell works if there is no wind. Doesn't take much of a breeze to make it completely ineffective. As far as spray goes the only thing that actually works in Deet. Not saying its a healthy choice, but it keeps the bugs at bay. One time I had it on my hands and was toting a rifle up the mountain. I kept getting this gritty feeling between my hands and the stock. Kept wiping my hands off. When I got to the top I looked at the stock. It had eaten the finish off the stock! Bugs were terrible that year!

One friend, a bug-time "bird-guy," hunting in Michigan once, said he got a bead on a nice grouse, but a mosquito got between him and the bird - bird got away.
