I was walking my little fat girl "Boots" around my 4.9 acres of pain and misery yesterday when out of the corner of my eye I see fresh sand being flung up onto a mound in my yard. "Why you little (insert all expletives here)". Being the "stealthy" 220 pounds I am, I plodded over in front of the newly constructed gopher tunnel and went to full draw. Sure enough, that little dirt flinging sucker stuck his butt up and I cured all his ills. My wife asked if I could have used a bigger gun (being sarcastic of course). I told her if I was carrying a bigger gun, I would have used it! I think this was the fourth or fifth gopher I have shot this year so far.

Hey you never know when one of the guys will turn rogue and turn to charge!!! When that happens you only hope the dog can distract it long enough for you to take a solid sight picture and deliver the one shot that deep down you know needs to be delivered or it’s the end of you in a greasy spot on the soil. Congrats on being able to keep calm and put those fine honed skills to good use.

I blasted one with a 12 gauge once. Nothing left but a little fur and the plastic shot cup.

Nothing more satisfying than taking out a gopher just as he thinks he has got clear sailing in my yard! I don't care what it takes, Gopher Hawk trap, sidearm, single shot 20 gauge or Sulphur flakes and the weed burner torch as long as the varmint DIES! Went out to check the live trap this morning in hopes of finding another racoon that keeps crapping cherry pits all over the yard and deck and digging up the grass but instead I got the same little gray fox for the 3rd time. Pretty little guy and man does he scoot when I open the trap to let him out.

If your talking of the grays, they are more timber/woods oriented than the Reds. They overlap ,sometimes do not get the memo. Grays average a few lbs heavier.

Good job, little bastards plow up a lot of ground if left unchecked.
About 10 years ago I was mowing our lawn with my riding mower and saw dirt being flung out of a hole. I made a few passes and the mower didn't appear to bother his work. I made a pass so I could see right down the hole from the seat and he was still digging so I gave him what for with 300 grains of lead at about 1200 fps out of my Bisquero and that managed to put him down. No more plowed corner of my yard by gophers.

IME, gophers are pretty easy to smoke out. But the moles close off their underground trails when they move from one room to another.
A sure way to get moles here in the summer is to get your lawn looking fantastic and well watered..... Bam! Here come the moles to destroy the lawn. They like that cool, wet, dirt.
The moles are the ones I have blasted with the 12 gauge, straight down into the hole as they push up dirt... pulverized.

Give you guys something to laugh at me over. A few years ago I am sitting on the front porch and as I look down I see a mole making a new mound. I look around and there happens to be a step in fence post there that I had used to tie up some flowers I grabbed the fence post and went full Lynn Thompson spear mode on the little sucker. Unfortunately I was a little over zealous in my jabbing because the next thing you know I have a nice geyser of water shooting up into the air about 8'! Yep that sprinkler line was right below his mound! My daughter who had been setting with me on the porch, didn't say a word. She just looked at the water fountain, looked at me and my face and quietly got up and went into the house. Smart girl who got her brains from her momma!

Met a rancher's wife in Wilsall, Mt while taking down a 27' x27' log barn. Her eyes would light up as she described how she would stick her 12 ga down a gopher hole and pull the trigger.
