Guys, I’m mostly on the single action side of this forum, but I have a question to ask about my Smith model 57. It’s a six inch, no dash, pinned and recessed, with aftermarket rosewood Hogue grips. I also have the originals but they have a chip out of the bottom. I also have the original box. The gun is in excellent shape, the box in fair shape. I’ve looked on Gbroker, and they range from $900 guns that didn’t sell to guns that sold for $1500. I’m thinking of selling it, what to price it at ? Thanks !

Personally I wouldn't sell it. It was built during the time when S&W produced some of the finest revolvers ever made. It is desirable, you'll never get one like it again. If you are determined to sell itI I'd price it at $1500 and negotiate from there but $1350 is very fair in the current market. It will steadily increase in value if you can sit on it a while. Post some photos of it and I'm sure the price could be narrowed down.

I’m selling several guns because I’m 74 years old and I don’t want my wife to have to deal with this after I’m gone. I haven’t shot it in years. Thanks for your advice.

The place to start is: Does the serial # start with an "S" or an "N"? The S guns are much more desirable.

What's the difference between "S" and "N"?

S prefixed guns are earlier guns and tend to be more desirable to many just like some of us like 3 screw Rugers more than we do the newer transfer ba Rugers. Personally, when I look for a S&W the S or N is one of the first things I look at.

If I could afford it I'd gladly take it off your hands, I understand not wanting your wife to deal with it after you're gone. I would gladly accept it as a donation to Rhino's Revolver Museum to which I am the custodian. 😂 My oldest daughter will take that position when I vacate it. She shoots autos but loves older S&W's and Rugers. Good luck on the sales of your firearms and don't take a low ball offer.

Mine starts with an S and I sold it today for a tidy sum over what I gave for it. (Don’t even mention inflation as it will dampen my enthusiasm) Thanks to all who commented !

...an "S" prefix 57 was made in the 1960s (1964-1968)...when S&W was at their peak... The bluing on those guns has never been duplicated.
Don't know what you sold it for but I follow 57s on GunBroker and in the condition you describe with original presentation case, many bring well over $2k...
If the original grips had the diamond around the screw hole they are know as "Cokes"...and by themselves will bring $800....

Bought these two recently. Neither with boxes or papers. The upper one is a 78 Magnaported 6.5" and a sweet action job that I got for $900. I lb 10 oz SA trigger pull. The lower one from a friend, 1980 from the serial number for $850. Both were very sweet deals at those prices.

Guys, I’m mostly on the single action side of this forum, but......................... I love Single Actions and enjoy them more than double-actions, but a fella still NEEDS Double-Actions.
I suppose if a fella were going to sell something, THIS is the time, but it's ALSO the time - a point of no return - when we can scarce hope to replace a lot of very nice things in the future, which don't seem to be as popular with the marketing teams and accountants.
I've usually personally tended toward firearms which don't cost a lot, regardless of what my finances were throughout my life, but even those "old" Charters and Rugers, which were once plentiful and cheap are no longer plentiful OR cheap. I think it'd be a lot harder on a guy who owns some of the classier items desired by more people.
Yours to decide. It took me forty years to start to focus on executing my long-standing desire to own just a few of my most favorite guns, so my perspective may not be as useful to you as that of most others here.

do...if you check I believe your 65 will measure 6" not 6.5. The 29s had 6.5" barrels but for whatever reason S&W only used 6" barrels on the 57s as their mid-length.
