Im in the process of making a few new front sights for a few of my sixguns. These will be silver solder type. What size do you cut the radius on the underside of the sight base, where it touches the barrel? If the barrel is 3/4” dia, would the base radius be 3/8”? Or is it a smidge bigger or smidge small to allow for solder flow? Do you have to allow for the barrel taper?

I recommend you check out Fermin Garza's front sights. He makes them out of steel or brass and makes most of them to be screwed in. He has a good variety of sights on hand and he'll talk to you on the phone to find out what you need. I'm not saying your sights won't be good but Fermin is a great option.

I would think finely fitted to radius and taper would work best, more uniform for adhesion. Show us what you got, I'm always looking for new ideas.

I've seen some of Steve's Sights and they really look good. I admire those who do home gunsmithing. It's never about saving money or competing in a business. It's about self satisfaction.
Kudos!!!

A decision was made and the radius has already been cut. For me it is about the self satisfaction of making it myself. I havent been satisfied paying a smith to do the work I want done. Ive been a machinist and tool and die maker for roughly 25yrs. I havent been able to work on my stuff because I cant take guns to work and work on them. But recently I have been given permission and access to a friends machinery. So its time to learn the gunsmithing side to the machine tool trade and catch up on lost time and old projects. Thank you for the suggestions
