I too am a fan of the .22 mag. It is my EDC for when horseback/running dogs/general woods bumming. She has claimed around 14 porcupines so far. The .22 mag does a good job dispatching them out of trees. I have a small pouch on my belt I keep earplugs in though. That is a loud little gun to shoot without hearing protection.

I made it to the range today with my 4 5/8” Single Six, some ammo and a chronograph. With the Aguila 250rd bulk packed Super Extra round nosed I was getting around 1,070fps, with the Super Extra hollowpoint ammo it was a bit over 1,100fps. With Aguila 40gr jsp magnum ammo I got a bit over 1,400fps and the CCI Maxi Mag 40gr hollowpoint was about 1,450fps.
Looks to me like the magnums from a short SS would be enough to hunt medium sized animals, which around here (WV) would include turkey, raccoon, woodchuck, fox or bobcat.
Just as I finished up using the chrono the sky opened and my shooting session got cut short. Next trip I promise to just shoot & enjoy.
