MICHAEL: 25.5 grs OF 2400 AND THE 300gr SIERRA IS ONLY ABOUT A 1,400fps LOAD ACCORDING TO LOADDATA.COM. WHY DIDN'T YOU TRY H110/W296 AND GO TO 1,600fps +? AT WHAT RANGE DID GARY BUST THAT BUFFALO USING YOUR 454?

I generally used 30.5 gr. of 296 and the 300 gr. Sierra in my 7.5” FA .454 for 1550 fps. Without doing some research, I believe that the largest animals I ever took with it were an African lion and a red lechwe. The rest were smaller African plains game or whitetails. No bullets were recovered. Congratulations on your safari, Michael.

You can always get more power, or go with a heavier Bullet. I’ve tested with H110, and that 2400 load is superbly accurate. When I can hit and cloverleaf a target with holes touching, that is what I am after. In 50+ animals, I have recovered exactly 2 bullets. With aimed shoulder shots, bullets pass thru. Under hunting conditions, which often are not ideal, I go for accuracy over extra power every time. I am going to do some barrel work on one of my 500L revolvers, to make it Africa legal, and change the Bisley to a RW 4 degree bearskinner Bisley grip frame. I will work on the most accurate load with that also, although Bullet weight is more. Just my thoughts on speed, weight and power, with accuracy being first.
I’ll take a perfect hit with a .38, over a clean miss with a howitzer.

MICHAEL: WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY "AFRICA LEGAL"? WHAT AND FOR WHAT COUNTRY?

A couple years ago, South Africa changed the SAPS law, or whatever they call it, that all handguns must have at least an 8” barrel length and an optic ( scope or dot) no semi autos either. this could have come into play, after a couple individuals used a 10mm to hunt with. I’m just going by what my PH said regarding handguns. I have a FA83 that I’ve carried for years, but it’s only 7.5” and is set up with an SSK arrest or brake. I knew there was a reason I kept a couple extra FA’s around. I sent one off to Gary Reeder and has a brake installed, plus a beautiful set of Sorel grip panels, so now it’s 9”. I mounted a Leupold DD scope mount, rings and a 2.5x8 Leupold. This is when I started testing loads.

On Freedoms websight The starting load with 2400 is 24.0 grains, with the Max at 27.0 for 55,000 CUP’s of pressure. 24.0=1450FPS, and 27.0= 1650 approx. so as a rough estimate I would say 25.5 ( my accuracy load) is about 1550 FPS. I don’t have a chronograph to test with, but it’s accurate and has taken lots of critters, so I’m good with that, at any speed. I’ve culled lots of hogs with 300 grain lead bullets, in 45 Colt at maybe 1000FPS, a slow heavy Bullet does just fine too.

Loaddata.com lists the 300 gr. Sierra and 25.5 gr. 2400 at 1429 fps from a 7 1/2" FA. The top load is 26.4 gr for 1491 fps. These loads were tested by Brian Pearce. But, as you say, your load does everything you want regardless of the velocity.
