Sad. Living the life so many dream of. When I was a kid living in Sitka, they flew the remains of a hunter off one of the nearby islands into town one day. All I saw was a blood soaked sheet over the guy. It was reported that the scene was just horrific where the sow took this guy apart. In this case the bear was protecting her cubs from a deer hunter.

I’m surprised an experienced guide would have only had “bear spray” in the back country alone!!!

If he was a hunting guide, he would have been carrying more.

I’m surprised an experienced guide would have only had “bear spray” in the back country alone!!! Trapr You'd be surprised at how many rely on Bear Spray. Couple of years ago my son and his hunting party saw 8 individual grizzlies while bow hunting elk in an are not far from this incident. The bears were within 100 yds and appeared interested in the elk calls. One night a local rancher responded to commotion in his stock pen. When he went to investigate, he was charged by a grizzly and had to shoot it. This was about 10 minutes from the house and in an area my wife and I walk our dogs a couple of days a week during the summer. I have a trail cam picture of a large grizzly taken last year within 20 min of the house and not far from the rancher encounter mentioned above. They say this is uncommon, but every year there are several "incidents" with both griz and black bears. It pays to be alert and capable of protecting yourself when recreating here in Montana. Typically bow hunters are most at risk. A number of other examples available, but I'm to lazy to go back and look them up. FWIW, Paul

When you have hundreds of people, going into what is essentially the animals home, and getting too close to something they want to protect, stuff will occasionally happen. Facts of life,,, and occasionally death.
Too many people think animals follow the "Disney" mentality. I see it all the time.
While we may not know all the details of this incident, it's safe to say that in general, people need to understand that there are critters out there very capable of inflicting serious injury & death to humans. A guide should have known better. Still sad though.
"Someone should make a big bore holster revolver and name it "Bear Spray"..."
Funny! I may call Doc & get a few pieces of leather carved with that on it, to add to my NW Hunters.

Good God. I read some of the comments under the story and just cannot believe the stupidity of some of them. Most of the comments are good and well grounded; others, I shall omit my opinion to keep from hurting someones feelings.

Just home from Penn trout fishing. I'll add, on running water, you cannot hear as well as when in the dark timber, say.. Last night, when I put my dog out for the last time, she would not leave the steps. Figured she'll wake me up later. Nope. This am asked wife if she had let the dog out during the night. She said no and the dog didn't want to go out yet. I had to take her out and her nose was going crazy, head on a swivel. This means we again have a bear in da 'hood. N.E. Ohio..

The accounts post incident say a group of 7 people investigating the scene were charged by the they assume the same bear, and shot it. Very strange for a group to be charged like that. Normally one might consider natural behavior of protecting a food cache as justification for a mauling and let it go, but very strange attacking a group, even if food involved.

Yeah, I didn't read those comments, but I don't have to as I've read plenty like them before. The fact of the matter is, the kind of people who make those type of comments are a huge part of the problem where bear management is concerned.

Send them into bear areas unarmed (or well seasoned with bear spray) and in the hunting season everyone else gets fat bears to hunt.
