I've wanted a rifle in this caliber for some time. More accurately, a single shot rifle.
My LGS was able to snag me a Henry Single Shot 30-30 WCF with great wood. So, this is my chance to do this project right.
There is some advantage to the 30-30 Ackley in a lever action. But, the bullets still need to be deep seated to function through the action.
With a Single Shot Rifle, Spitzer Bullets seat less in the case adding to the already "Improved" case capacity.
I've had a 30-30 Ackley 14" TC barrel for years and it generally adds 200+ fps in the single shot over the standard offering. Heavier bullets seem to show the most gain.
Jack Huntington and our own FlyingZebra will be doing the rechamber/remarking.

I thought about an improved chamber on my custom Martini Carbine, but during the build we suspected it was a very good Khyber pass imposter... side seal stamping was near perfect... insides were a little rough, & were replaced where needed with "real" Enfield parts, & new 1-12" twist barrel was added... we decided to do a few proof charges on the regular 30-30 case, & call it good... single shot allows the same Spitzer bullets, & with the long neck of the original I'm happy the accuracy I'm getting out of it... my wood is original "like"
looking forward to seeing your new Henry

I've got a Ruger #1 30-30 that could become an Ackley Improved too. Also, a Remington 788 in 30-30 WCF that will stay as is.
It's still (like all the hyphenated cartridges) an underestimated round.
Hodgdon's Leverevolution Powder makes it rock.

My Martini 30-30 is the top rifle in this picture... ( note the bayonet lug, in case one shot is not enough, while deer hunting )

Yes, I chose the Steel as I don't care for the fake brass finish. The Steel is the model available in 308 Win, 243 Win, etc. I can only assume it's the stronger of the two as well.

So it's a lot like the handy rifles... my retired machinist buddy had a handy, & built 2-3 changeable barrels for that rifle...
Henry does show some pretty wood on their sight...

Similar to a much upgraded Handi-Rifle.
In fact, they take the same scope base. I bought a really nice scope mount/rings combination. I don't care for the cheap look of a rail sticking out past the barrel contour.
I can easily get 2350 fps with the 30-30 using 165 grn Spitzer Bullets and Leverevolution Powder.
Hoping to get 2500 +/- fps with the Ackley Improved. Only time and my chronograph will tell...

Love the idea, have been considering one of the Henry single shots in .357 Magnum to ream out to .357 Maximum. I have been wanting one for a while, also thought about the .357 Maximum in a Thomson Contender carbine. I am not sure which route I am going. And yes I know the make the Henry in .350 Legend, just not my thing.

The 357 Maximum works great in a Carbine. Heck, the 357 Magnum is great in a Carbine.
The Henry 30-30 has tighter chamber dimensions than any factory 30-30 I've measured. The back of the chamber measured a snug .420". Should be an ideal rechamber candidate.

I have shot the Improved .30-30 quite a lot. The only aspect to loading is it is easy to very slightly collapse the neck at the shoulder junction. The slight bulge just below the shoulder will prevent chambering.
Velocity goals of 3,000fps with 100 gr, 2,700fps with 125/130gr, 2,500fps with150gr and 2,350fps with 170 grain bullets easily achieved in the 20" lever action rifle.
Many appropriate powders available.

Hodgdon's Leverevolution Powder will increase those velocities considerably.
The Henry has a 22" barrel which will help also.
Have had a 14" Contender barrel many years too. I find the Lee Collet Crimp Die completely eliminates the crumpled or buckled cases.

That is the correct metric designation for 30-30 win. Trapr

The plan is to simply engrave "Improved" following the original markings...

That is a cool project, And having a real master do the work will make it really shine. Like so many projects that we loony gun nutz think about , there is usually a more practical way to get the same thing done. But as I said for years if we were practical , we would all buy a 30,06 and be done with it. And there would be no such thing as engraving at all ! I will be interested to hear what the trigger is like when JRH gets done with it ! The couple of those Henry single actions I have handled needed help in that regard. Is there a plan for custom sights ? ...tj
