I’ve been trying to get a crossdraw holster for a 3-1/2” large frame Vaquero that will be comfortable on the tractor and mower. I used a pattern from a Freedom Arms crossdraw I bought recently here on the forum. The FA holster works well with my M97 but I wanted the grip frame rotated more into my body so I wasn’t creating such a prominent bulge. I also added a few degrees of rotation more towards horizontal. It’s been a couple of decades since I tried making a holster and I was none too good then. After a few missteps, it’s now drying on the wall in the vault. Still needs finishing but it conceals under a long t-shirt pretty well. Next I’ll give it a try on the mower if the rain ever stops. The plan is to put together a nicer one if this one works. The reality is I’ll just use and abuse this one. I don’t know how Doc Barranti does this day after day! My hands are raw and sore! Tim

When you make the "nice" one to replace that one, I'll pay the postage and a small take away your guilt fee.

And since you've kinda given us a peek into the candy store, tell us about that ungainly shooter above the pistol please.

And since you've kinda given us a peek into the candy store, tell us about that ungainly shooter above the pistol please. Old Remington Rolling Block, rebarreled by an unknown Wyoming gunsmith with an octagon chambered in 45/70. I think it was something Numrich used to offer barrels for. Has a pretty chunk of walnut. Been years since I’ve fired it off. I’m not well versed in identifying what model it is. Tim

I only called it ungainly because it doesn't live here. In one of the magical calibers too. I can't see that kicking much.

Even though I sure don’t like to show my backside in a public forum, here it is. The back us where the way amateur skills show up - crooked stuff. So far it is very comfortable while mowing. Tim

I have seen quite a few "custom" leather smiths do a LOT worse than that. Good job man! Wear it in a while and make some adjustments and I want one JUST like that! No tooling, no nothing but a good wearable holster. Good on ya.

The back just has to work not look pretty. I mostly wanted to see how much rake you were able to get. I like that a lot!

I mostly wanted to see how much rake you were able to get. I like that a lot! It is a few degrees more towards the horizontal than the Freedom Arms holster I was using as a template. I also tried to form it where the butt of the gun turned more in towards my belly to conceal a bit better. Tim

Nice, utilitarian rig. How about a full look at the pistola too? It’s the middle one. Left is Gallagher 500 Linebaugh Middle is 45 Colt with Bisley hammer, free spin, trigger stop and BP chamfer. Much used and abused. Factory Ruger fake CCH which is mostly rusted and faded away. Right is 32 H&R Mag Single Six with Bisley hammer and CCH by John Powers back when he did work for Alan Harton. Tim

Nice start. I've made about two dozen myself and a copy of that exact samr holster forca friend.
A couple of suggestions if you plan on making a dozen more as I find it relaxing during extended down times.
Stitching, subscribe to Tandy's mailing list and get a stitching pony. Their spendy but they used to have them on sale twice a year fot about a third off. Nothing will improvebthe quality, appearance of ease of stitching. I use pricking irons and an awl and 1mm tiger thread.
Sight Channel: When wet forming, get sone wood, 1/4" x 1", and 1/4" x 1/4" (hobby shop) and build a wooden track from the front sight to the receiver and tape it to the barrel. Trim the 1/4" x 1 so that is is an 1/8" taller than the front sight and goes over the top of the front sight. This will prevent the front sight front gouging the leather when pulling it outta the holster.
