What is the normal turn around time for a custom gun( or is there such a thing?). I have a number of big bores I bought used but last year I decided to have one built to my liking. Decided on Jack Huntington. He is a hoot to talk to. He is building me a 500JRH. Sent him a donor last year. He told me to call him in Jan. I did and he said give him a week. Called back a couple weeks later and same thing. I don't want to bug him as he is busy so I have not called back. I know the first FA I ordered took over a year. Guessing the same with Jack.

No such thing as normal. I will say that Bowen has usually finished in less time than he quoted while the others I've ordered from have taken a bit more time.

Some of the time is not the builders fault... Jack did two guns for me...one a S&W M53 .22 Jet to .327 Conversion and the other a Uberti Cattleman .357 to .41 Special Conversion.
Both were "easy", pull barrel and send for reboring. Rechamber the cylinder. Remark the barrel... The 53 took three months...the Uberti nine...only because the rebore guy misplaced the barrel...

in the military acquisitions process - this is often the question of the "three legged" stool - quality, speed and/or price....
the best approach is "don't expect it any time soon" and you will be pleasantly surprised when it shows up!
i've had some guns go as long as two years (deployed then, so no biggie) to as little as 6 months...

I sent a check and gun to Dustin Linebaugh 3-2015.
I emailed him a few weeks ago and it’s in process “with a few others”.
So wait times can vary widely.
I expected 4-5 years with him

I expected 4-5 years with him So would that mean 6 years appreciated price as well? So I guess you got a deal on it! LOL! I'm waiting on my first full build now and some days sure seem longer than others!

I got lucky with a Bowen gun recently that I got an invoice for and was ready to send for grips in 5 weeks!
Don't think that's the norm. All the stars aligned and he was doing another 5 shot gun so all the fixtures were installed and he simply went along with it.
I'm right at 3 years with a couple builds from Clements.
Grips...that's another story...some fast, some slow...just depends on the workload and the maker.

He doesn’t have a price list anyway so it’s hard to say 2015 vs 20XX pricing. I’ve definitely had these thoughts though because he has raised his prices at least once since then.

I sent some work to Alan Harton several years back and he quoted me 1 year... I had to scramble to get his payment together when he called me just short of 4 months saying the guns were ready.
I am getting parts together for a 41 Spl conversion to send to Andy Horvath. I hope I am still alive when it is ready... I wanna shoot it now!

I don't know Dustin but Six years does seem ridiculous... I would suspect that some of the best gunsmiths are great gunsmiths, but poor shop managers... I would think a good well managed shop, would not take payment or your gun, until they could turn it in a year or less... but there are likely some gunsmiths out there where you do what you can to get an example of their work, & feel privileged to get it, even 6 years later Dave Clements had mine just under a year, quite reasonable considering he had to send the barrel out to another shop for a rebore... John powers about 8 months... Michael Gouse engraving has always turned over my guns in a couple months I honestly doubt I'd have the patience to wait more than a couple years

I've been lucky. Clements sent one back 6 months earlier than expected...most have been 1 - 2 years.

I have waited 4 years. Not sure what to say about it. It sure was a long time. However I was able to visit the builder in the interim, bring him a hot coffee, see the project in the intermediate stages and tweak a little to the left or right. In the end it might just be my most prized firearm.
