Shop insulation design organization tips

We have a 36' x 63' garage (Morton buildings mortonbuildings.com/) that we're planning to have insulated and etc this summer. It has 5 insulated garage doors on south side and a regular pedestrian door in south east corner. We will probably add a bathroom in northeast corner (already plumbed before concrete was poured).

I've heard closed cell spray foam works wonders and is great to reinforce metal (tin walls). I've heard that closed cell spray foam eats away the metal. Anyone know?

Anyone have any tips or great websites for organizing it or anything like that?

They build igloo style homes with rebar, chicken wire, plastic sheeting then spray the outside with bed liner. Blow the plastic sheeting up with a fan, set the rear and chicken wire and spray away.


Had friend who had and old Chevy work/delivery van sans any interior in the back minus a rubber mat in the back. Sprayed it out one night after work and it really stiffened up the sheet metal and it held heat alot better.


As far as rusting out the metal, if applied properly there should be no problems. Ambient air temp, surface temp, dew point and rh%need to be correct. Sweating surface, cold surface and hot product, rh to high ect as the product generates alittle heat.

Google spray foam horror stories. If off ratio or poor install it can cause outgassing or or odors from uncurred resins which can result in a myriad of symptoms/problems. Ask for previous ustomers, industry certs, product used ect.

Sprayed quite a bit in the early 00s. Trying to stay away from isocinates these days but still manage to shoot a few hundred gallons of plural urethane every couple of years.

New house built nearby had the walls shot with what appeared to be shredded paper products like brown bags & newspaper. Provided excellent fill from stud to stud, etc. Suspect it most likely cannot be left exposed.

Seems just like concrete, spray in bed liner, Cerakote, etc. if it’s done properly with correct prep there are no issues and results are quite satisfactory. Done poorly or not follow recognized practices then issues result, much like the axiom of “buy once, cry once”. This is no place to go with bargain pricing, headaches down the road are NEVER worth the few dollars saved at time of purchase.

Got a buddy that had his shed about the same size as the OP walls sprayed with 6" of foam, boxed in the trusses & blew cellulose up there, easy to heat, & hold the heat for several days...

MRS used to work for a tree service that had the next size bigger steel shed, with 6" of foam & a tornado got close & totally destroyed the shed... regular construction house got bumped a little off the foundation, with otherwise minimal damage, so don't count on the foam to hold a big cavity building with lots of wind resistance together

Getting organized is one thing, stating is another

We are doing a complete remodel of our house and our contractor said closed cell foam is the only way to go now. My first concern was that he was trying to sell me something but then he said he nor his crew do it. That told me he was telling me straight.

Today...

Spray foam insulation place assured me there were no issues.

Morton buildings assured me all except one special formulation would eat awsy the metal and strongly recommended against.

here in MN, they put house wrap on the frame before installing the steel... this means you're actually spraying onto the house wrap, & I think that is the fix...
