I want to try my Super Redhawk in IHMSA silhouette. NO way could I shoot 40 rounds with barn burner loads! I use the RCBS 400 grain cast bullet. Slowest I could find was a load in the Lyman cast bullet handbook, 13.5 grains of Alliant 2400, for 902 fps. Trail Boss had the same bullet down to about 600 fps. That's TOO slow. Anyone have any experience with this cartridge for Unique?

"down to" you can certainly run loads hotter than that with Trailboss, & probably lighter bullets than 400 Grain... though a quick look I didn't see any commercial cast bullets lighter, but like Speers Deep Curl is available in a 275 grain bullet, so while the shortage rages on, there is likely something out there in cast that's lighter than 400 gr
Haven't shot shot CAS for quite a while now, but I have a load for my 45 Colt, that fills the case 3/4 full, & produces excellent accuracy with 250 grain cast bullets running 800 ish FPS out of my 4.5" barrels... would think a scale up to 480 would get you a good competition load...

I'd suggest investing in a Load Data account.
Lots of what you need there...
405gn RCBS cast SWC Alliant Unique 8.5gns 912fps
I'm not responsible for this load....

It's not so much the velocity as it is the RECOIL. The bullet I'm using comes out of the mold at a little over 400 grains. I guess I'm looking at getting around 850 fps, or so. Let momentum do the rest. Thanks for all replies.

Look in Speer Manual #14 for 480 Ruger loads with Unique Powder...

Let momentum do the rest. Thanks for all replies. I haven't worked with the 480 Ruger, but I have chased lighter 500 Linebaugh loads in a Blackhawk. Muzzle loading balls tumbled in Alox + Trail boss are the cheapest thing to shoot that I've found. I size Hornady 0.520" balls down to .512 and shoot them. They're still basically ball at that point. A 0.480" ball might Just Work for you. To my surprise lead round balls haven't leaded my barrel and are plenty accurate for me to train with. So I think they're worth trying. Since it's officially safe to work up loads with Trail Boss by starting at 70% case fill and going to 100% it's the only powder I've used for this application. I keep adding powder until the cases aren't sooty and it does not stink to shoot them. I was hoping that would be "recoil free", but it still felt like shooting a 1911, and actually had more power to it. I can't help you with actual load data for hitting your 400gr @ 850fps target, but just wanted to strongly recommend a chronograph for the journey. I really wish I'd gotten one years before I did. It can be pretty eye opening to learn how much a loud report and bright muzzle blast contribute to how difficult to shoot something is. Or at least it was for me. Obviously that's going to be an individual thing. But I think it really helps actual performance and shootability. I also wouldn't be too quick to dismiss a 600 fps muzzle velocity with a 400 grain slug. That's the same momentum as a heavy 10mm load (200 grains at about 1200 fps), but with a lot less "bark". Good luck! —Vincent

My light target load is a 370 rnfp over 9 grains W231 for 929 fps. I'm thinking 8 or 9 grains should get you where you want to go. I've used 8-10 with the MP 410gr in my 475L to great effect. I've settled on 10 grains, which runs a bit over 900fps in my gun. It is a super easy, all day sort of load. I'd probably lean toward something a bit quicker stepping for silhouette, but it's a good place to start.

Ok, I tried the 13.5 grain load from the Lyman cast bullet handbook. Over my Oehler chrono, it runs and average of 820 fps. I have the 9.5" barrel, and Lyman shows 902 fps. Anyway, I'm thinking this may be my starting out load for silhouette. Thanks for all the help, fellows.
