Has anyone here tried the Power Custom free spin pawl in their Single-Seven? If so, what are your thoughts, is it a worthwhile addition?...Is there a better option?

I've put them in two S-7s and love them with the tight extraction windows.

Why not modify the factory pawl to make the cylinder free spin?

Thanks...I have the PC pawl on the way, I'll look at it & see about altering the factory part as well. It's my understanding that it's easy to remove too much material & scrap the factory part.

I SENT A 7.5 INCH S7 TO BOWEN FOR A SOME WORK, INCLUDING A BISLEY HAMMER AND A FREE SPIN CYLINDER. THE FREE SPIN CYLINDER IS AN AWESOME MODIFICATION TO THE S7.

Trying to do a freespin on a standard Blackhawk filing on the factory pawl. I had hedged my bets and had a PC Freespin standing by though. I pretty much gave up then and just buy the PC pawls and fit them. I get to adjust the timing slightly this way also.
Recently my shooting partner decided he wanted his revolvers to freespin and we had to slightly file the pawls on his Flattop's even after removing the pin and spring. My 44 Special Flattop was good to go with just removing the pin and spring. At least with the Flattop's I don't have to spend the extra money for another pawl. Every BH is an individual it seems.
It's not a S7, but my S6 32 got a PC pawl. I noticed I had to take some off of the top of the pawl to get it fitted correctly and almost none on the second notch. Different than on the full-size BH's (at least for me). These little Ruger's are all different critters, especially a S10. I didn't even try to make sense of the timing on the S10 I have. I just shipped it back to Ruger. Must say they corrected the timing perfectly.

Why not modify the factory pawl to make the cylinder free spin? Several hours got spent on the factory pawl trying to get it to free spin. It did give more of a window for loading and ejection, but the material was getting sparse so I stopped removing material. A New Vaquero crescent ejector rod was fitted, and in grinding material from the length of the rod mimicking the S7 factory part and it too gave a little more wiggle room in the frame window.

I too chickened out before I got it to free spin . Done several full sized guns no problem. Geometry must be different on the S6/S7 guns.

My Power Custom pawl just now shipped & should be here in a few days... I'll compare it to the factory part & make note the dimensional difference's.

The Ron Power FREE SPIN PAWL for the Blackhawk/Super Blackhawk is timed in part through calming action between the pawl and its slot in the frame. I suspect the same may be true for Single-Six series. On one Super Blackhawk or Blackhawk I was unable to time the Free Spin Pawl. In discussing it with Ron Power, Ron said he had encountered one or two instances wherein the slot would not accommodate his pawl. He said the problem was in the casting. The tail on the Power Custom pawl bears against the slot in the frame. Power’s pawl is ingenious and simple, but engagement & disengagement with the cylinder ratchet depends on the slot cast into the frame.
It is important to follow Powers’ instructions. I’ve had one Ron Power pawl be a drop-in fit on a SBH. The rest required varying degrees of dressing. PATIENCE and frequent fitting is key. It takes less time to get it right than to get it wrong. David Bradshaw

True words written there, especially about the frequent fitting. The freespin portion is easiest for me because it's already apart. With a Blackhawk, I can dress the "tooth" easily because there's plenty of room (please use a file with a smooth side) to touch it up. I found my S6 to not have enough room inside of the cylinder frame to file without possibly touching the blued surface and just took it apart each time. I've also never had to touch the top "tooth" of the pawl on a Blackhawk but did on the S6. Different critters they are for me.
