Friend of mine in Texas has a Winchester Ranger bolt gun..just a Plain Jane Model 70 in .223... The rifle has taken 40+ deer and hogs all with one shot each. 30-150 yards...small does to a 150# 8 point shot by his wife at 150 yards...it was a bang flop through the shoulders. It was also the only bullet that wasn't a pass-through. Two doe ran at the shot...one made a small circle and the other a 30 yard dash...everything else hit the ground.
Many of the deer were taken by his 4H Group kids on their first hunts. There were no missed deer...and no failures to drop.
Store bought ammo was the Winchester 64 grain PowerPoint.
Handloads using the same bullet, 63 grain Sierra SMP and the now discontinued Trophy Bonded Bear Claw.
All deer were standing or feeding unaware...no chancy shots taken...
I'd rather hunt with someone like that with a .223 than the BoZos with pump-action .30-06s that I see in the woods of Pennsylvania shooting at moving deer through the trees hoping for a hit...
