How strong are front sight bases that are screwed on rather than soldered or dovetailed on? would they probably hold up to heavy 5 shot only 45 colt loads?
i know I’ve heard of ERH screws shearing off which makes me wonder if a screwed on sight base would be a mistake on a big bore.

Never heard of it being an issue
Recoil pushes the sight base against the barrel, and the low mass of the sight base works in its favor compared to an unsupported steel ERH.
I’ve shot revolvers with the front sight taped on with painters tape.

In conjunction with a screw, Loctitie 380 should free your mind to focus on shooting. Heat is required to soften, should you want to remove sight in the future. I clean surfaces with acetone before applying the glue. David Bradshaw

I know John Linebaugh for years screwed his front sights on his 5 shot big boomers. I'm sure you have to be careful to have the right thread pitch and proper screws with Loctite but they can be made to work for sure.
I think Lee might do his front sight bases that way as well...

I blown off the front sight of a gun I had customized, but I also think it was a crappy soldering job too. I cant see a dovetail coming out under recoil. They use them on custom big bore Vaqueros.

Sometimes they use loctite to glue the sight down and assist the screw, without applying to screw itself. Have seen it done with scope mounts as well. As not to strip or damage the screw.

Thanks all. got an idea the other day for a sight base and sight that should be pretty cool (if it works out) but it may require removal occasionally.
