Hi all- Having a problem with sight regulation on my Ruger Old Army when using my conversion cylinder. I assume everyone who plays with these has the same problem since you end up with a bullet weight range from 140gr for round ball through 250+ for Colt. My particular one is set up for .45acp and I was running the same 200gr loads I use in my S&W4596 and getting a group six inches high at ten yards with the sight tightened all the way down. I figured a lighter bullet would bring the group down so I went on a hunt and found some commercial cast at 160gr which did bring it down to about 3 inches high at the same ten yards.
I can handle that by obviously aiming lower but I sure wish I could use my regular ammo and be able to adjust for it. If I throw on a taller front sight it'll obviously allow for heavier bullets but then what when I want to shoot round ball? Two front sights fitted to the gun and then swap 'em out for what I'm shooting for the day? Any other options? Thanks folks.

Is your rear sight blade replaceable?

Sounds like a good 150 yard gun as is!

Yes Dick, it's the standard Ruger Adjustable. Do they make different height blades?

Sounds like a good 150 yard gun as is! I'm sure lot's of folks can do that but I'm not one of them. Besides, I doubt the range would like me to tear out the back wall to go beyond 50yds.

...I think he is asking about the front blade...some are one piece and some have the blade pinned to the base.

Gun in question is a Stainless Ruger Old Army with adjustable sights. Front sight is a pinned blade like all the stainless Blackhawks and Rear is the fully adjustable factory Ruger unit that is very easy to replace the blade on.

A new front sight can be made with the minimum of hand tools - make it taller. I made one for mine out of brass and then eventually mild steel. A piece of 10 ga. left just enough to work down to get a nice, smooth finish of each side. MAde one for an SP101 I had a Smith M60 adjustable rear sight installed on too.
Barring that, you can remove the rear blade and fie/stone/sand down the top of the blade, at least to the top of the body of the sight's "housing"(?). I did this with a couple guns, notably one of the first 2009 44 Special Flat Tops, which shot extremely high. Ruger took it back and fixed the timing issue by replacing the whole gun, but forgot to address the front sight issue. The top if the rear b lade/notch on mine is almost even with the part of the sight that holds it and it did the trick.

I have a pair of "identical" 5-1/2" fixed sighted Old Army sixguns. With 40.0 grains of black powder and round balls one shoots 1" high and the other 2" high. With the conversion cylinders and 250 grain .45 Colt loads the first one shoots 1" low and the other one shoots 4" HIGH. So they are totally opposite and what they do with .45 Colt loads.

Talked with Fermin and I think we've got it worked out.

I knew that Sir. I always remember that when I have a gun issue that defies logic.
